Photos are from my recent trip to Tunisia, it's battle damage but I'd like to know what caused it. Artillery, mortar or cannon fire perhaps? Ideas or answers welcomed! The building is the water tower at Djefna railway station in-between Green and Bald Hills - site of several failed attempts by 1st Army to get through this position to Mateur and Bizerte end of 42 and beginning of 43. FYI, the site remains untouched since that time. That's Green Hill in the background, I'm facing roughly north. All the damage is on the west side which was the direction of the British attack.

Always one for a very long shot (seven miles maximum), either of those mentioned most likely a shrapnel burst from a Field Gun shell or 4 inch mortar (or Axis equivalent of) either landing within 30/40 metres of it. Smaller ordnance 2 inch mortar or grenade would need to be much closer but possible. Burst effect depends upon the ground condition. Looks dry and stony so bits can fly everywhere. Perhaps a few bullet strikes as well.
Never been close to the the receiving end of a 25 pdr except from an occasional bad ram on moorland terrain. Most of the rounds landed on the opposite hillside. Never had the chance to fire near buildings. A few older members might have though.
