Hi folks, I've been looking through some old photo's of my grandad and was wondering if anybody can tell me which unit this Dingo belongs to?(He's sat on the left). It says 11th Hussars on the back but on the other photo (taken around the same time) his cap badge looks more like 3rd Kings Own Hussars (he's far left). Can anybody help? Cheers Mark
The chap with the bino's around his neck looks RTR the one on the far left as you look at the picture looks like 3rd King's Own Hussars as you say or possibly The Queen's Own Hussars but I suspect it's more likely to be the 3rd King's Own Hussars Do you have a date for the pics and assuming your grandfather was an officer what is his name?
The two blokes on the right are 11 Hussars (distinctive 'beret' with no cap badge). The Dingo looks like it may have a 7 Armd Div rat on the front (though the square ought to be red) which would also tally with 11H.
Thanks for your help. My grand father was Sergeant John Bolland. I don't know much about his military history. I understand he was an instructor at Bovington Camp before going over to Germany in early 1945? The photo with him in the Dingo says 11th Hussars. The other one says Kelling Lausen 1945 myself, Captain Pritchard and 2 of my class. A number of his photos mention Kelling Lausen. I suppose its possible he changed units?
I have most of the 3rd King's Own Hussars war diaries and they were not in the UK for most of the war - North Africa and on to Italy. That doesn't mean he wasn't attached to a training school. I've only got the 11 Hussars war diaries up to December 1944 and there is no Captain Pritchard on the Officers Field Returns
Thanks folks. I've just been looking at the 11th Hussars war diary. Can't find any reference to my grand father but 11th Hussars went to Kellinghusen (Kelling Lausen?) in June 1945.
Mark, this site http://www.desertrats.org.uk/artefacts2.htm#11Hussars has plenty of pictures identified as various squadrons of 11th Hussars, all with the '44' insignia indicating the armoured car regiment of the division - in this case 7th Armoured. There are several Dingo pictures which make yours look familiar...
Thanks for all your comments. Is there anywhere I can contact to try and trace his records, assuming he was with the 11th Hussars, which I believe are no longer a unit?
Link here for service records https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records If you don't know his service number, then the FULL date of birth will be required Lesley
Thanks, Just found his service number on my mums birth certificate! Sgt 7931328 R.A.C which I presume is Royal Armoured Corp?
Yes that number falls into the army number block allocations for the Royal Armoured Corps Royal Armoured Corps 7891869 - 8230000 also 558471 - 558761 http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/4837-army-number-block-allocations/
'Horse Power' is now the amalgamated museum for several Hussars regiments - the libraty/archive have been nothing but helpful in my researches - but I agree with the advice that service records are the best first base.
