    What is written in small white print on both sides of the hull in front of the star?

    Sorry, missed this. That looks like a standard shipping stencil. It gave details on weight, cubage, and other stuff like that. Sometimes they were painted over by the Ordnance depot receiving it before it was issued, but I suspect gives the losses in the Bulge the process was accelerated and so it got left on.

    Yes, Richard, thanks! I have found the identical info - these are shipping or rail road stencils. Up to ten lines of text (1-2 inch white letters) gave length and width of the vehicle in inches, also shipping and combat weight in pounds and other relevant information.
    And a five pointed white star as the US national identification symbol that time, in front of the tank often had a circle around, to avoid looking like a German cross at long distance…
