Photo of a US ship on its side with landing craft, anyone ID the ship or its type, there is a man on it just above the xxx on the ship and one walking across the sand. Photo from my collection. Keith
LCI(L). Landing Craft Infantry Large and with a few badly damaged small landing craft providing the clutter. Any idea where the photo was taken? What makes you think it's a US ship?....likely US manufactured but they also served with other Nations. Looks like a mini ships graveyard somewhere.
The landing craft have US on the side and the photo came from the US and it looks like an invasion fleet in the background with barrage balloons in the air. Keith
I can't make out any letters on the images posted: are any numbers shown? This could/would give a clue about location.
'US 33' and 'US 17' look like they are smaller landing craft - LCM(3) in the pile. The number we want is on the gun tubs on the gun tubs in the second enlargement: US XX7 (probably a 3-digit number from the alignment?)
The low circular features around the superstructure. Alternatively, is anything visible on the bow on the right?
Hi, This could be LCI(L) 497 on Omaha Beach. Some more photographs here http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/15/150497.htm Regards Danny
Damn! I went through the navsource list and noted 497 as the only possible. Didn't scroll down to the photos, though - duh! Well spotted.
