Eulogy for Veronica Canning, written by Tom Canning ...

It is my sad duty to inform you of the passing of yet another WW2 Veteran who served from 1941 / 47 who, as a seventeen year old – prevailed upon an older sister to forge her Mother's signature to allow her to serve with the women's Royal Air Force (WAAF) - justly annoyed at being bombed out and machine gunned in Birmingham.

She served in Sheffield – Blackpool and Colnbrook where she was promoted and took charge of the “dead and missing Airman's personal effects “ Office - and where she was handed the forms of a dead airman with the same surname- it was her brother Leo Sadler who had been shot down returning from a raid on Dusseldorf. It was also at Colnbrook where she witnessed the initial laying of foundations for what we now know as Heathrow LHR.

The war ended and she worked for the Wolesley Motor company and marrying in 1950 with all the difficulties in rebuilding a bankrupt Britain with it's lack of homes and eventually the decision was made to travel the Commonwealth before it all disappeared – the main trigger being the Suez Crisis when the once Great Britain was told to cease and desist within a few hours of Victory !

On landing in Canada it was learned that “we” were pregnant and the die was cast to stay and put up with the cost which was heavy on a very small income as opposed to the “FREE” NHS in the UK.

Matters improved with joining a world famous tool company to take over the Province of B.C. - then Alberta and again Toronto before returning to Alberta where by 1970 great changes were taking place in both the Church and the world which was affecting her now larger family of Simon – Elizabeth and Mark, and so the family sold up and moved back to the slower changing UK in time for a three day weeks trauma in industry.

The Children were enrolled in good Grammar schools and eventually Universities where they did very well and justified the decision to return, a business was started and on retirement a return to Canada where the initial plan was then put into operation with visits to Fiji – Australia (2)-New Zealand- South Africa and all but the Eastern African and Indian lands were visited with almost annual visits to the UK and Europe mainly with our daughter who still lives in the UK.

So it could be said that she had a good life apart from more than a few traumas during the war but offset by the visits to Hammersmith Palais de Danse in her quest to become the best Ballroom Dancer around and visits to the “Peggy Bedford” on the Slough Road to drink Orange juice while her friends quaffed their 11 penny beers – and her ability to pack a bag in minutes to prepare for a month long trip to anywhere at anytime.

All this allied with her love for her children and grandchildren of Ella – Sylvie and Lewis and her many friends, and an undying love of her Country she served so well as a patriot with not a racist thought in her head.

Thus has ended our 61 years of marriage and she will be missed by so very many so I would ask that you offer a prayer for the repose of her soul.

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi , dona eis requiem sempiternam

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Veronica Canning (who amongst her many achievements could count being Tom Cannings wife of 61 years ) has passed to eternal life today. Tom has prepared a eulogy for her. She was a Ww2 veteran serving in the WAAF from 41 to 47. I will post this eulogy tomorrow but I know many of us will wish to offer Tom our deepest condolences on his loss. :poppy:

It seems that the eulogy written by Tom was misplaced.
I am adding it to Susan's original thread.
    :poppy: RIP Veronica Canning :poppy:

I must say that I have been deeply touched by the outpouring of sympathy from many
quarters of the forum as along with the more than 130 e-mails - and the 100 odd cards
received to date the family have been busy in responding to all - so now the family have returned to their homes and the house is strangely empty and silent and life goes on

My thanks to all as Veronica will be greatly missed by many.....

    Cheers
    Tom
