Apparently he was a Australian Rules football player of some note:

Footballers' Tribute To Clyde Helmer at Trumper Park on Saturday, Australian Rules enthusiasts stood in silence as a tribute to the late Warrant-Officer Clyde Helmer, who was killed in action in New Guinea.

Clyde Helmer came from Mooropna to Geelong (Vic.) in 1937 and played as centre forward, kicking 137 goals in 71 games

He played for the Victorian interstate side, and also, more recently, with South Sydney. (I am sure that they meant South Melbourne)

    & this from 1947 - CLYDE HELMER TROPHY PRESENTED - Geelong Expresses Appreciation - Shepparton Advertiser (Vic. : 1914 - 1953) - 24 Jun 1947

    Another death notice / article: KILLED IN ACTION - Sporting Globe (Melbourne, Vic. : 1922 - 1954) - 2 May 1945

The trophy is still being presented (attached)
