Hoping someone can help with a bit more information about Mary Macdonald's cause of death. The only information I can find is that she died in the city of Lincoln. She is buried on St Finan's Island in Loch Shiel. A remote and beautiful spot which is only accessible by boat. Many thanks, Dave
Her death certificate should show you the information. Although the spelling is different I believe this may be her record:- First name(s) Mary Last name McDonald Gender Female Birth year 1921 Age 23 Death quarter 2 Death year 1944 District Lincoln County Lincolnshire Volume 7A Page 494 Country England Record set England & Wales Deaths 1837-2007
There is a set of photos on this, minus her grave alas: Eilean Fhianain, Burial-ground And Grave-slabs | Canmore Twitter came to the rescue, with a photo of her grave marker taken in March 2023 (as in Post 1). See: https://twitter.com/bob_ross/status/1630935777688338434 Plus, a reference to a BBC Sounds programme, later id'd 'A tomb with a view' though no longer available and the third episode refers! He also has a book. See: BBC Radio 4 - A Tomb with a View by Peter Ross - Episode guide Her parents were living close by, 4.5 miles to the north: From: http://www.atsremembered.org.uk/CWGCpdf.pdf It appears the descendants include a Catholic supporter of Bonnie Prince Charlie, of the 1745 Rebellion and the Web has too many webpages to assess. One recommended site for local research was the local history group: Moidart History Group - Comann Eachdraidh Muideart: She was not the only ATS member who died that day. Might that help? There was: From: http://www.atsremembered.org.uk/CWGCpdf.pdf
Thank you for this! I did know about the book and the video but had no idea about the BBC Sounds episode which referenced this. I’ve ordered a copy of Mary’s death certificate which will be here in a few days. Perhaps it will also shed some light on Eileen May? thanks again, Dave
The casualty lists show Mary Macdonald as 'died', perhaps indicating natural causes, illness or disease etc whereas Eileen Chalk, on a different list, states 'died as a result of accident'.
Going off subject I know but this looks to be Eileen's husband? Petty Officer Supply Wilfred Maurice Chalk | War Casualty Details 2438334 | CWGC
Thanks once again. Yes, definitely looks like her husband. Quite a tragedy, lost her husband and then lost her own life. RIP Mary, Eileen and Maurice.
The Moidart History Group should be the next place to contact. It is unclear if Mary's father was the head of the Clan, they will know. Then Peter Ross, who does have a contact address via his Twitter profile. I expect he will be the supplier of radio documentaries, rather than a BBC employee. Perhaps, he has had Moidart History Group's help?
Peter Ross is the author of this wonderful book and visits to CWGC sites are featured in one of the chapters. His new book Steeple Chasing is due out next month. Dave
