    Hello everybody,

I am looking for the incident in which Squadron Leader (at the time) Smith was forced to abandon his aircraft and was taken prisoner. I cannot find any reference to this in either of these two links:

Commonwealth biplane fighter aces - Robert Higson Smith

Collection: SMITH, ROBERT HIGSON (WING CDR)

Document WO 392/21 shows that prior to the Italian Armistice he was being held in POW Camp 21 at Chieti, Italy.

I have to assume that he escaped from a train taking him north from Chieti following the Italian armistice of 08 09 43, as he appears in documents in the INSMLI Archive in Milan in the Bacciagaluppi collection,
both in In File 4, Folder 19 (a list of prisoners of war who escaped from Italy to Switzerland with the assistance of the National Committee for Liberation) and in Folder 20 (those who arrived in the Swiss Canton Ticino from Bogno Certara - see below).

He crossed over the Alps on 9 December in the company of Major George S.C. Trench R.A., Gnr. Charles H. Nuttall, Tpr. Edward Roberts, L/Sgt. Leslie E.A. Lulham, Pte. Frederick J. Baker, Gnr. T.G. Roberts, Dvr. John Brown and Col. George H. Fanshawe . His signed chit was handed to their guide. (see below). He was interviewed by Intelligence on 10 December (E&E report WO 208/4270 findmypast.co.uk).

    Regards,

    Vitellino
