After such a terrible year that has been 2020, a bright spot that brought bittersweet tears to my mum's eyes.
My nan (mum's mam) served in the WAAF during WWII, only being discharged when she was pregnant

I have had her service record for years and it had no indication that she was eligable for any award, so never pursued it. This year though, I started to research my great uncle, and decided to send off applications for any awards he and my nan may (or may not) have been awarded.

On Friday I received my nan’s WWII 1939-45 War Medal in the post - the cost of a stamp to the UK in August this year, has paid off in spades. (Admittedly, I'm was extremely surprised, as I calculated the time she served and it didn't appear to meet the qualification period, but I guess I missed something somewhere.)

It was a bittersweet moment: she never knew she had been awarded this, but her family is proud as punch.
