Does the 39 register have a name in red ink above the surname to indicate a marriage?

So are we thinking that the second line reads

"Ches Co Womens Aux Air Fo..."

Cheshire County Womens Aux Air Force??

    From the same scribe,
Difference between N and V, an 'h' with a loop and some other letters and sixes.
"Class" looks similar on the last image, Class 38.
Clas 60 on Phyllis' record possibly?

Yes and I think the top line is No. ???

Number something as WAAF had flight numbers for example No2 Cheshire county Auxilary Air Force

As you are next of kin can you not contact the national archives with copy of the page asking for a transcript direct from the original source as they would be able to say what is written in the crease and what else is written on the opposite page?

  5. Unfortunately it appears that the original books are not at the National Archives. "The 1939 Register is a digital-only record: the original register books have been retained by the Health and Social Care Information Centre now named NHS Digital, and are not held at The National Archives." It is possible to read them for free online at Kew but there is doubt whether what they have is the same as FMP of is a more complete copy. I have a query in with them at the moment. I also have a query in with NHS Digital.

James - thats part of the problem, Tracys mum was adopted at birth, and we are trying to trace/find details of Tracy's grandmother (who was born in 1920 in Shropshire and enlisted in the WAAF during WW2) - or thats what I understand the situation to be.
The problem is that Tracys grandmother had the baby in London and the 'adoption agency' no longer exists and neither do the records.

Correct me if I am wrong otherwise we will all be going down wrong roads

edited - to delete repetition of details - must be time for :sleepy:

Where did the original service number come from

If it is on the adoption certificate then that would be grounds enough?

  9. That's exactly the situation. The service number was on the adoption certificate.

So in terms of contacting MOD you can prove nok by adoption certificate, you just need to find a death certificate. Is that correct?

Have you tried phoning them to see if they can give you an idea of death? Or place of birth as I have found them very helpful in the past

  11. I cannot prove nok as she may well have married and have other children. There is no amendment on the1939 register but of course she was single in 1945. There are a number of possible marriages in Shropshire and I have enquiries in with registrars to see if I can find a marriage with the right parent's name. If she married out of county then there are too many to do this. My hope in contacting this board is that someone may know another way of finding out some details of her service history which may give a clue as to where she settled after the war. I also have a query in with Kew since someone kindly confirmed her service number was correct. It appears the image of the 1939 register is the same as that held by FMP and so I have a FOI request in with NHS Digital for the contents of the right hand page of the register. Finally there has been speculation on the board that the words on the 1939 register may refer to Cheshire. If so this might be an indicator as to where Phyllis returned after the war but takes my enquiries into a whole different county.

The 39 register was updated regularly until the 1980's with new names as and when married.

By having the adoption of she later remarried then your mother was still the first born, I would try phoning the MoD the number is listed on the .gov site and explain the situation.

There was a RAF file searchable by number held by the national archives. This would confirm first names and I believe date of birth
If it does then you may find date of death through ancestry/fmp

I will ask on one of my other forums
