1 - 31 January 1946 During the first week of the month the Battalion was warned to be ready to move up to the KIEL area at the beginning of FEBRUARY: needless to say this was not received with much enthusiasm - the Battalion is just beginning to settle down here. This move has since been postponed to the end of the month though. The area has also been changed - HAMBURG is to be our new destination. There has been little training done - the Battalion is not yet fully up to strength. Nine Carriers arrived from the 3RD BATTALION, the Mortar Platoon has been formed and has started its training. The Rifle Companies have carried out several village searches - these have had no purchase other than providing the Companies with experience which would be useful should there be any trouble in the Kreis. The only Battalion commitments have been supplying Guards for the Divisional Commander’s house, Brigade H.Q. and other suchlike establishments. Several new awards of decorations have been announced: MENTION IN DESPATCHES Major R.S. LANGTON Lieutenant J.B. OSBORNE MILITARY CROSS Major M.J.P. O’COCK Major R.S. LANGTON MILITARY MEDAL C.S.M. McCOMISH (This Warrant Officer is not yet back in the Battalion but is due to arrive very soon - he left here as a Serjeant). Father TOBIN joined from the 3RD BATTALION when that Battalion left for ENGLAND. Captain M.R.G. EARLS-DAVIES came from ENGLAND to take over No. 4 Company from Captain A.E. DORMAN who has left the Army. Sport: The Battalion unfortunately lost by one point the Brigade Boxing Competition - there was some very good fighting and the 1st Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS did not have an easy victory. Skiing: The snow the Germans have been promising us for so long arrived by only lasted one day - it was followed by a rain storm which ruined all chances the Battalion had of skiing. Despite this quite a number of the Guardsmen did go out on the one day there was and thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the nursery slope. There has been plenty of skating during the month - during a very severe frost at the beginning of the month all the lakes and ponds in the area froze - there was always a large attendance on the ice every afternoon. Ice Hockey provided enough casualties to keep the Medical Officer busy.

1 - 21 February 1946 Gummersbach Most of February was spent in preparing for the move to the HAMBURG area. The Advance Party left in the middle of the month and the rest of the Battalion moved up by rail and road at the end of the month. 22 - 28 February 1946 Hamburg The Battalion now occupies a large German barracks - with a little more furniture and more coal it could be very comfortable. It is freezing cold most of the time. The general feeling is that the Battalion was far better off back in GUMMERSBACH. There is much more in the entertainment line up here though. The Battalion commitments are fairly heavy here: there are five guards to be found outside the Barracks, and the Battalion area is a fairly large one taking in most of the dock area. But these agonies will become less in time. Before the Battalion left GUMMERSBACK quite a number of farewell parties were given. Most memorable of these is the one given by the Serjeants’ Mess for all the Serjeants who were leaving the Army in Group 26. Nearly thirty of the Serjeants were leaving. A sad blow to the Battalion was the departure of Lieutenant-Colonel G.A.M. VANDELEUR DSO who left at the end of the month to attend a Course at the Staff College at HAIFA. Up to the present the new Commanding Officer has not yet arrived. The day before the Battalion left GUMMERSBACH the long promised snow arrived. It fell in such abundance that the Officers’ Mess truck which was due to leave twelve hours after the rest of the column was stuck there for another week. The ski centre had been abandoned and closed down the week before so there was little chance of any of the rear party having much fun. The more energetic have since been able to potter about on skis on the only slopes that can be found in the HAMBURG area.

1 - 31 March 1946 Little has happened since the Battalion in HAMBURG last month. We are still finding numerous Guards all over the Battalion area - this takes up practically a whole Company at a time. On top of these Guards there are also others which come up every now and then, some quite interesting. The Battalion had to supply an escort for the crew of the BISMARCK last week when they arrived in HAMBURG. There have been very few incidents in the Battalion area - one Sergeant and one Guardsman were shot but not seriously. These odd incidents are bound to occur, especially in a large town like HAMBURG where the Germans have been treated very gently by the Occupation Troops. The average type of German here is most unpleasant. St. PATRICK’s DAY was its usual success: Brigadier J.O.E. VANDELEUR DSO presented the Shamrock and took the Salute at the March Past. The only thing the Day lacked was the Officers v Serjeants Football match - this had to be cancelled owing to lack of a ground. On 17th March the Support Company was officially formed and appeared on Parade for the first time. It is commanded by Captain R.B.H. INGLEBY, the Company Sergeant Major is C.S.M. J. MOORE. There has been nothing happening in the Sporting World - this is due to a lack of sports grounds; these are being made as fast as possible. Captain M.R.G. EARLS-DAVIES, Lieutenant T.E. HALLINAN, Guardsman GOULDING and Guardsman O’NEILL were chosen to play in a Rugger team for 8 BASE AREA in the inter-Divisional Competition.

1 - 30 April 1946 At the beginning of the month Lieutenant-Colonel D.M.L. GORDON-WATSON MC took over command of the Battalion. About the same time the Battalion left 5 GUARDS BRIGADE and came under command of 6 GUARDS BRIGADE: a sad blow to the many who have in the last five years come to know and enjoy being in the 5th BRIGADE. Also at this time came the departure of Major N.S.P. WHITEFOORD MC who left to become D.A.A.&Q.M.G. at 5th GUARDS BRIGADE. He was replaced as Second-in-Command by Major G.P.M. FITZGERALD MC. The Battalion's activities are still restricted to Guards and duties in HAMBURG. Quite a number of Officers and N.C.Os are required weekly for duty in the various Clubs - also at CURIO HOUSE, where all the War Trials take place. Other than these fatigues the Battalion has little to do. Sport: There has been very little Sport during the month - mainly due to the fact that no grounds have yet been finished. The Battalion entered for a seven-a-side Rugger competition with two teams, both of which reached the final. Outstanding players in the Battalion Team were the Commanding Officer and Second-in-Command.

1 - 31 May 1946 During the month the various fatigues the Battalion has had to find have to a certain extent been lessened. Several of the heavier Guards have been handed over to other Units. It is hoped to get rid of several others in the near future - this will leave more time for Company training, a thing most difficult to carry out at the present moment. An Officers’ fortnight was held during the month; this took all Officers and was most complete. Drill Parades, Company Drill, Colour Drill, Lectures on Wireless, Motor Transport inspection, Map Reading and Regimental History kept the day fully occupied. A most instructive fortnight enjoyed by all. Athletic Sports have really got under way now. Most of our outstanding athletics have vanished back to civilian life during the past six months but it is still hoped to be able to produce a first class team for the Brigade Sports next month. The first Battalion trials were held on 22nd May. The Battalion has been lucky enough to be able to engage two German Olympic athletic champions as Instructors: one specialises in Field Events, the other in Track. Into the bargain we have just C.S.M. COOPER posted to the Battalion - he is a tower of strength at organisation and instruction.

1 - 30 June 1946 The Battalion's activities are still very limited. Guards as ever are practically the sole occupation of a very large percentage of the men. There have been promises however of a definite improvement during the coming months. Training has begun now with the arrival of a new draft - this is still difficult though. The Field Firing Range at PUTLOS near KIEL is a great help - it is hoped to sent the first Company up there in the near future. The Rifle Range situated close to the Barrack is helping to improve the standard of marksmanship within the Battalion. Every Officer and employed man has to qualify every month. The ordinary duty personnel fire every week. Sports: The Battalion has the makings of a very fine Athletic team this year. This is all due to the energy and drive of a few individuals. It should go far in the various competitions which take place later on in the season. During the month the Barracks, known as ESTORFF KASERNE, has been re-named St. PATRICK’S BARRACKS. It is now rumoured that the SCOTS GUARDS over the road are re-naming their Barracks St. ANDREW’S BARRACKS. The coming and going among All Ranks is far to great to be mentioned in detail - it is very difficult keeping up with the speed of demobilisation. Let it suffice to say that the face of the Battalion has even in one month changed beyond recognition again - a thing which has unfortunately to be borne these days.
