Was there a change in the numbering system for LCI(S) in late 1944/early 45

    Hello,

Would like some help with something that has puzzled me for some time.

It concerns LCI(S) vessels eg in Operation Neptune and Operation Infatuate (Walcheren).

I have noted information for D-Day and elsewhere on this site 'Danny' has handily listed the units which took part in the attack on Walcheren. I believe 40 of these craft were built in UK boatyards (Nos 501-540) and "Warships of World War II by H. T. Lenton and Colledge J.J. indicates that the numbering system was theoretically available up to 600 (and that there were 8 losses in 1944).

There is a fine photograph of LCI(S) 2503 in the IWM Photograph collection and I am guessing/wondering if '2' was added as a prefix to the original LCI(S) 503 and perhaps the other surviving LCI(S)s. Can anyone confirm this change in nomenclature and when. 2503 remained with Combined Operations until at least June 1945.

    Thanks and regards

    Hi,
The “2” was added to the pennant numbers in early 1945.

LCI(S) 2503 remained in service until 1948/49 being sold in November 1950.

    Regards

    Danny
