Recently completed: the day to day account of the 8th Rifle Brigade's (11th Armoured Division) advance from Normandy to the Baltic, between 13 June 1944 and 8 May 1945. The account is based on the Battalion's War Diaries and its Company Histories which were published right after the war (the Battalion is believed to be virtually unique in having published histories at company level). It contains some 130 items and numerous photos and other illustrations, and can be found in http://8thriflebrigade.co.uk/d-day-to-ve-day/

A few photos from an inspection by the King and Queen and Princess Elisabeth, of the 8th Rifle Brigade. According to description, "York area", 22 March 1944. Looking at the Battalion's War Diary, the inspection took place at Bridlington. Buildings are still there, at Limekiln Lane.

The fourth photo shows Lieutenant-Colonel Treneer-Michell, CO 8th Rifle Brigade, to the left of the Queen's hat (just to the left of the King) and, I believe, General Pip Roberts just to the right of Princess Elisabeth. Any other opinions about it being General Robert?

Certainly looks like Pip Roberts. Would be good to find other photos taken that day to compare - according to the Bridlington Facebook page there were Tanks etc also on display that day.

If you mean the senior officer wearing jodhpurs I’m pretty sure that’s not Pip Roberts. Roberts appears in other photos (sorry, didn’t log the numbers) and he is clearly wearing service dress trousers.

I defer to John's view - on reflection that chap also looks too old to be Roberts.
Is the chap on the extreme left wearing an RTR Cap Badge - 3 RTR would have been there that day.

The chap on the extreme left is Major Kenneth Mackenzie, OC H Company, 8th Rifle Brigade. So, the chap is not 3RTR, but 3RTR was inspected that day: HIS MAJESTY THE KING WITH HIS ARMY.

Suppose this is Roberts (second from right)?!

Understood. I now realise that RB and RTR Cap Badges are very similar (both round with bits in the middle :) ).

That looks more like Roberts - I hope John concurs after my previous performance!
The chap on the right appears to be wearing a Kings Shropshire Light Infantry Cap Badge (KSLI were in the 11AD Infantry Brigade at the time).

Yup, that’s Pip Roberts! Next question - who is the bloke with the para wings being spoken to by the king? He’s wearing a side hat as opposed to a beret so he’s not KSLI and despite the caption he does not appear to be an officer.

Some sort of liaison chap?...or one of those chaps who called in air strikes? You can tell I've never been in the Military can't you...:)

What's the badge he's wearing above the para wings? Certainly not an 11th Armoured badge...

No rank badges on his shoulders? Could he be the padre?

New page started on 8th Rifle Brigade website: http://8thriflebrigade.co.uk/getting-ready/. This page will eventually describe the battalion's history before D-Day, from its formation in September 1939 (when still called 2nd London Rifle Brigade) until early June 1944. If you've got any information or photos to add, please get in touch!
