What do you want / did you get for Christmas?

Christmas, and my close-following birthday, brought a few more for the library:

I’d asked for Shooting the War as I’d remembered Waddell recommending it. The other two were very thoughtful, and very well received, surprises from my mother-in-law and wife.

Further T-shirt winning. Deranged sister has an eye for such:

And sprog Beta got me a nice tiny blue Bosch 12v combi drill. Mostly about the included batteries & charger so I can finally get into the 12v ecosystem for cheaper less-needed tools & less weight in the bag.
It's good great when they have work, but lordy it's now almost impossible to buy him presents as if he wants it he buys it.

Didn't feel 'Christmassy' once this year.
I can usually turn on Carols from Kings or something and get a hint of it, but no.
Not scrooge-ish, just didn't feel it.
Maybe it's all a bit silly once the sprogs are past ten or so...

D’oh, I’d thought von Poop’s one was Vlad the Impaler!

Took the tree down today and the missus said exactly the same thing, it just hasn't felt like Christmas this year, maybe it's not quite the same now the kids have flown.

I was given these unasked: they're much better than some of the abysmal pop-history I've received from well-meaning relatives in the past!

M.R.D. Foot occasionally had long articles in The Economist on intelligence matters, sometimes his reflections were revealing. No wonder his seminal work SOE in France took four years to get clearance. See his obituary: MRD Foot obituary and longer (behind a pay wall I expect) MRD Foot

Plus this thread: MRD Foot - SAS WWII & SOE Historian

Well, I'm still in charge of the mash. Most of the stuff I got this year was kitchen-related / things I'd hinted at. None of my presents had anything to do with WW2.

I was very pleased to find that my son had bought me a cracker this year. A copy of Chindit Indiscretion by J H Denny. Perhaps not one of the WW2 "classics" but its a book I have wanted to read for a while but somehow never got around to seeking out a copy for myself! :)

I enjoyed reading that many years ago.....it has some wonderful descriptions of the jungle and related atmospheric noises etc. Had it ear-marked for reference if I ever wrote something similar myself......but never have. May well revisit....so thanks for reminding me. :)

Good to know, thank you! I do like the style of those books written relatively soon after the war - they have a very different feel - mostly - to those written in the 1980s. I look forward to reading it in the new year, once things are back to normal! ;-)
    Merry Christmas to all! :)

A profound tale from a Twatterer. A few years back, but blew up today:

    There's wisdom there.
    We're quite simple creatures.

    Zero fat this year.
    No 'hilarious' clothing or books.
    Nothing except dull quality stuff.

Pressies deffo improve when the little (massive) swine get jobs...
Another Smartwatch from sprog beta because he's a show-off.
The usual bottle of decent Tequila and a box of Redbull from alpha (you just cannot go wrong with someone's favourite booze, can you. Been buying the brother in law the same bottle for 20 years now.)
And the fishwife got me the most frivolous screwdriver imaginable, as she knows I wouldn't have ever got it for myself, thus making it a proper present.

    Happy half-a-bottle-of-petrol-flavoured-drink-in Christmas.

Well chuffed with my small selection this year, above all the two Halestorm CD's (American rock band for those not in the know).

I've seen this book advertised quite a lot on various Aviation sites, and decided to buy it later. No-need now, had it bought for me for Christmas. Looking forward to reading this.
Notice how the three chaps (Guys) on the right looking at the camera are all wearing Fez's :) this being after a trip out to Morocco. Though none are called ''Tommy'' but Frank Murphy is the guy in the middle.
