I wonder if that's related to an email I got a while back relating to one of my paybooks and Anzio - unfortunately I couldn't be of any help to them and they didn't tell me who it related to - guess I better watch and see.

No doubt an Irish military historian will provide some background on the Anzio bit...

    Paul Hollywood's grandfather
Sgt Norman Harman, No 3912965, 90th LAA Regiment, Royal Artillery. 40mm Bofors guns.Service in Tunisia and Anzio.
    ---------------------------------------------------
His gt/gt/gt/gf? a crofter in 1800's in Poolewe, Gairloch.
Also 'ran' the post every week from Poolewe to Dingwall on East coast, 60 miles and back over mountains, carrying mail for 30,000 people. Must have been as fit as a flea, lived into his 80's. What an achievement.

Must say I thoroughly enjoyed the programme :)

That area of Tunisia looked/looks absolutely gorgeous in April - as I saw for myself a couple of year ago...it can get a bit miserable, muddy and wet from December to March though.

I watched last night's episode with much interest simply because I was for two years in Light Ack Ack myself.

I was slightly miffed that the program failed to make clear from the onset the important role that the Ack Ack regiments played namely the defence they provided at all times for the units to whom they were attached. To be fair, there were many references later made concerning the vicious air attacks to which they were subjected whilst performing their core duty but I felt that the producers had failed to explain things correctly from the onset.

I was also finding myself amused that Holywood was talking about his grandfather....... it made me all too painfully aware of my own increasing age :(

Ron, The trouble with any programme you watch where you know more than the people who have produced it is that it just frustrates you. But I suppose they have to get a lot of info into a shortish bit of film, and what might interest you or us might make others eyes glaze over! Looks like it is going to be a good series.

My great grandfather was in the Glasgow police force and district at the same time as Paul's ancestor. He was dismissed twice for being drunk on duty. Maybe they were brothers in arms - The Kings Arms Tavern likely. I believe that the police ran a protection racket with the publicans therefore booze was flowing for free.

Thought the Paul Hollywood show was pretty good. Note Frances de la Tour is in this latest series and I wonder if it includes her Uncle and the famous photo he features in?

The programme about Jane Seymour's relatives had a particularly poignant ending. At the end of WW2 her father had visited Bergen-Belsen camp hoping to find his cousins but without success.

When Jane Seymour found out when and how her Polish Great Aunt had died she was visibly shocked. This was a family history search without a happy ending ... just the brutal reality of what it was like to live through the Holocaust.

Finally caught up with the Paul Hollywood episode. Thought it was one of the better ones I've seen for a while. Excellent contribution from Richard.
