    Winston,

Hello and welcome to the forum.

My late father was 4th Recce Regt, 4th Division in Italy and Greece, hence my Avitar.
Several other recce fans on the forum, but no other veterans as far as I am aware from the Recce.

Quite a few of us with interest in the Italian campaign and so it would be extremely interesting to hear some of your experiences if you are prepared to disclose some of them.
    Hope you enjoy the forum.

    Regards
    Tom

HI and thanks for welcoming me.Ihope I can add some info about my time in the 5th recce.Training was started in Lochmaben, then onto Catterick anti tank gun training.Morecambe near my home town, then to Wales.North Africa ,Algiers was the landing point to join 5th recce, then off to Sicily. The progress was after the invasion up through Italy .where we aquired a German mobile kitchen on the way .Trying to remember events Ive tried for a long time to forget,so Iwill sign off now until another day when I can tell you my experiences at Anzio,Rome then off to the south of France,Germany, through the Black forest up to the Baltic coast.Regards Winston

    Welcome Winston,
Do you rememebr being at the Roman Ruins at Minutrno ?
Paul & I were there back in May 2008 .
I have a picture ein the Div History of your unit having a wash & brush up there, we found some of your mates names on a Roman statue.

    I'll copy the photos here.

Do any of the names ring a belll?

Next to the Cemetery is the ancient Roamn ruins of Minturnae .

We had a look around & I took my copy of The 5th Division History in with me because of this photo.

I wanted to find where the photo had been taken & try and find the statues.
We found two of them, the leg and the one on the right of this photo.
The staff of the Museum were very pleased to see the WW2 photo.
On closer inspection we found WW2 era grafitti!
The lads of 5th RECCE had left their mark.
I hope Paul has some good photos.
From what I can remember there was a "Darkie" Bingham, D.Johnson, Ireland and 1944 all scratched into the statue.
Iain & Gary are having a good look.

    In heated discussion...

Hard to read, but it does say 'Darky Bingham':

    Owen,

I hate to disappoint, but the name scratched on the statue is
    "Darky Brigham" not Darky Bingham.

Owen ask me to write a bit more, so here goes!Istarted telling Owen some of the pre breakout at Anzio. At this time we were relieving another part of our div, in the wadi. Our section officer called me over .I was a corp. at that time, saying "Ive a present for you" opened a box and inside was a snipers rifle .Being a marksman I was going to go out as a sniper in no mans land.A patrol was got together to find the snipers lair for me.On heading out ,one of our patrol stepped on a mine,it shattered his leg and also my mate was wounded. The patrol was put off to get the wounded back ,we spent a few hours with bayonets prodding the ground for more mines but no more were found. The trooper with the leg injury said At least I can get home alive. My mate also went to hospital .He told me after that the doctor couldnt find a wound! It turned out to be a nail had gone straight in with just a tiny head showing. It was pulled out and he was soon back with us.No going home just yet! That was the end of the sniper ing.
