This Letter was written by a member of the 9th Panzer division. It’s dated May 29th 1940. The field post number shows that his division was in the town of Doullens on May 24th when Hitler gave the order for his troops to stop. Doullens is about 70 miles from Dunkirk. I suspect the letter was written after they left Doullens once Hitler gave the order to proceed since the post date is May 29th. The division arrived in Dunkirk on June 1st. The letter reads: “Feldpost to Miss Clär Winkler, teacher from Inkofen via Neufahrn, lower Bavaria Sender: Winkler, Feldpost # 11166 29. May 1940 My dear Clär, now it's your turn again. Thanks a lot for your parcels. We are no longer bored here, things are always going forward. The sea isn't far away. In the next few days a second "Tannenberg" of tremendous extent will be beaten. Otherwise everything is going well, which I also hope for you. Cordial greetings and goodbye , your Pepp.” *The Battle of Tannenberg, which he mentions, was a historic World War I battle and took place in the area south of Allenstein in East Prussia between German and Russian armies from August 26 to August 30, 1914. The German side fielded 153,000 soldiers, the Russian 191,000. It ended with a victory for the German troops and the crushing of the Russian forces that had penetrated into southern East Prussia. *
