WW2 Haircuts

    Norman Drummond and Eddie Freestone spent 9 months preparing for their escape from Stalag 383 in May 44. The time enabled them to grow their hair long. Their scheme was to travel as dressed as women, although in the end, their cover was adjusted to go as a Danish academic and his wife:

    One of their ‘OPSEC’ needs in the build-up was to explain away the increasing length of their hair, not least amongst some of their fellow PWs. Interestingly, the German guards at the start weren’t too curious. It would seem some of the latter with a predilection for styles with long flowing locks on top - as seen in some of the earlier photos in this thread - would wear hairnets themselves.
