Looking for more info and Ships served on for following! Harry Frederick Daniels DOB: 20/11/23. Place of birth: Castle Hedingham Essex. His official number is JX555321 He served from 05/07/43 to 20/03/46. He was a gunner I have his Gunnery History Sheet which was taken in Chatham (HMS Wellesley) in October 1943. I also have his Order from Release from Naval Service from HMS Pembroke in February 1946. On his record it does say the name of ships, Glendower, Wellesley, President III and Pembroke. However I understand these are training camps and holding bases. I have tried looking at the National Archives but don't seem to be getting anywhere as I need the ship name to find his records. Thank you in advance for any info! Vernon
I also have the Philoctetes in my fathers (thomas Francis Fletcher) CERT of service from 4th oct 1943 to 8th feb 1944. with a rating of A/ERA h/c what ever that is? Looks like this was a supply ship of some kind? http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=265&pictureid=2256 Acting engine room articifer 4th class. sorry for the delay.
Hi James. Thanks for your post. Apologies for the delay in replying. No excuses, I've no idea how I didn't see this. His official number was preceded by "JX" Substantive rating reads: "Rigger / PO" NonSubstantive rating reads: "DDPR" Someone has suggested that the first "D" is an error and possibly it should read "BDPR" for Boom Defence Petty(officer) Rigger. I've no idea but I'd love to find out what DDPR or BDPR means for sure. Cheers Robert It is boom defence petty officer rigger, Did he have R/ before his official number? my GF also served in boom defence, let me know what bd vessels he served on, i may be able to help sorry for the delay

Hi all, this is my first post and I am hoping somone can point me in the right direction. I am trying to find out about a friend's brother who served in the navy (Royal I assume) in WW2. The only details I have are as follows: Jim (not James) HOLT, born 1925 in Bolton, Lancashire, where he lived with his parents. He is thought to have joined the navy when he was 16 (may have lied about his age) so this would put it about 1941/2. He received multiple gunshot wounds at some stage which he survived and was invalided out of the service. He was granted a pension of 45/- a week but he died of the effects of his wounds in 1951 aged 25. Any help as to where I might find any information about him would be much appreciated. Thanks, Dave
It is boom defence petty officer rigger, Did he have R/ before his official number? my GF also served in boom defence, let me know what bd vessels he served on, i may be able to help sorry for the delay Hi James. Thanks for this. There is no "R/" that I can see. "Chatham. JX 620036" is how it is recorded. He was on Burgonet. Cheers. Robert
David W Ask your friend to apply for his service records at the address below that will give you a starting point, there maybe a delay between applying and actually receiving the records and it will cost about £30.00 unless he is next of kin. welcome to the forum and in the meantime post any info you have and we will try and help Navy (including Royal Marines): RN Disclosure Cell Room 48 West Battery, Whale Island Portsmouth PO2 8DX
Hi, new to this so bear with me please. trying to do some research on my grandfather James Slater DOB 13/12/1908 known as Jimmy from the NE scotland. I have contacted the Royal Navy and been given the following infop on him but wonder if anyone can elaborate on this to give me a fuller picture. I also know that he was awarded the BEM we think out in Africa somewhere I have traced a James Slater in the London Gazette37119 date 14/6/1945 LT/X 3183U which ties up with ref number from Navy but unsure of what it was awarded for. Family seem to think his ship was hit and he was involved in repair work using various pipes and bean tins to get it going again- but then again he did spin a good yarn!!!!! Records mention the following HMS Pembroke - leading seaman sep 1939 HMS Loch Tilla- " sep 39-apr 41 HMS Bacchante - " 15&16 sep 1941 HMS Dunluce castle " 19 apr 1941 HMS Loch Tulla " apr-aug 1941 HMS Europa " aug-sep 1941 HMS Iron Duke- wartime Engineer sept 1941 HMS Lizzie West " sep-oct 1941 HMS Lochinvar " oct 1941 HMS Lizzie West " oct41-nov 1943 HMS Europa " nov43-feb 1944 HMS Edinburgh Castle " feb-mar 1944 HMS PortsdownActing Chief Engin mar-jun 1944 Lumley Camp " jun 1944 HMS Porstdown " jun-oct 1944 Lumley Camp " oct-nov 1944 Hms Portsdown 2 nov-dec 1944 HMS Eland Engineman dec44-feb1945 HMS Europa " mar-apr 1945 HMS William Brady " sep-nov1945 HMS MArshall Stoult " sep-nov 1945 I realsie its quite a list with many reapeats but just thought someone might be able to make it a bit clearer for me. Have a few photos which we have of him at that time which we would like an ID for as well but haven't figured how to attach them yet !!!! many thanks

Pitty they have no record of the actual citation but at least we are starting to puit a picture together many thbnaks.
Your welcome Moira. Unfortunately the LG didn't give citations in the Birthday Honours Lists. Regards Hugh
Additionally, what was happening at Freetown? Was it a stopping off point for the war in the east? If you're still interested in Freetown, Sierra Leone my dad wrote this in his diary: Friday 28th January 1944 "I rather think that Freetown is now one of the largest overseas naval bases. The harbour is ideal being one of the best in the world and, although I have no idea of the number of men around here, it must be pretty big. Freetown is the base for the South Atlantic fleet and a pool of ratings is always kept in two luxury liners converted into naval vessels. Although I have never been aboard either of them, I am told they are very grim as they are so overcrowded. My dad was stationed at HMS Spurwing, the naval air base at Hastings about 15 miles from Freetown. "
Thanks Noreen I've got my photo blog uploaded now and there are some photos of Freetown (1943-44) on that. I Think I Prefer the Tinned Variety
Hi Everyone, Just joined the forum today and hope you can help. I am looking for a relative who served on board HM Whaler "Skudd V" a mine sweeper WW11. I can't find anything about this ship or its service or where to look. The relative I'm looking for is James Gay LT/JX 174412 he was killed when the ship was hit by german aircraft on 22 aug 1941 21 yrs of age in Tobruk I believe. Apparently he was mentioned in dispatches again which I can't find. He came from Fifeshire Scotland. Also Robert Gay of the Merchant Navy same war, reported drowned at Gairloch Scotland again only 21 years of age. I have nothing more on this chap at all except they were related, both from fishing families in fife area. I know this is a long shot but any hint on where to look them would be most helpful. I hope I have posted this in the correct place. Thank you for your time reading this. Doreen
Hello and welcome. It looks like James Gay WAS awarded a MID. This link: WW II Awards for RN Minesweeping Lesley

Hello Doreen and welcome, [James Gay] Here is his entry in the LG. No citation - not normally given for Mentions or Commendations. Viewing Page 434 of Issue 35432 Do you have a date and place of birth and a year of death for Robert? Regards Hugh Thanks for the prompt replies Lesley and Hugh. I did a trawl this afternoon and found the site you mentioned Lesley it doesn't give much away though. Hugh, I dont have an excact date of birth for Robert as I am still putting my family tree together, as the name is so common in fife it's hard work piecing who goes with who ( or should that be whom). I am still looking for accidents or ships lost in Gairloch area as it is thought that is where he drown. I think there was land and sea operations on that side of Scotland, just beginning to research that one. AllI have is he drown at Gairloch age 21 yrs and he was born near Pittenweem / St Monans. Thanks Doreen
