These aircraft were from the USAAF No 496 Fighter Training Group which was based at RAF Goxhill in the NE corner of Lincolnshire. At the time Goxhill was used solely for final training of USAAF fighter pilots destined for the 8th and 9th Air Forces.

One of the problems the USAAF had was that all of its fighter pilots had been trained in the good skies and weather of the US.Hence had no experience of the weather they would meet in combat in European skies.Consequently it was found that it would improve combat proficiency if incoming pilots, acting as replacements for the European theatre of operations, had an induction period of flying in British weather. This policy was implemented from 1943 and continued to be until the end of the war in Europe. However Goxhill was handed back to the RAF in January 1945 and was allocated to Fighter Command but the station remained inactive for the rest of the war being used for bomb storage storage post war.

I think the Home Office had tenacy for a considerable period after the war.The site was used for the long term storage of Green Godess military fire fighting vehicles.
