156th Bn. Parachute Regiment - Arnhem POW's?

    hello everyone, my wifes grandad was telling me about his time in malaya ,apparently his seargeant used to lift spirits by telling the lads about his experiences at arnhem,and he would show them a telegram sent to his parents(MIA?)his name was harry barnard if anyone could give me any info i would be very grateful

    Hello Kes,

    The only Barnard I can find is a Sgt George Edmund Barnard, 6402811, of 2 Para. I can't say whether or not he was at Arnhem but I know that he died on 17/4/45 as a result of an accident in Scotland so I doubt if this is your man.

    There was also a Barnard with 250 RASC, but I think this was Kenneth, will check it out

    Private H L Barnard 5511669 is shown in the POW list as Army Air Corps. No camp details are given.

    if he is army air corp ,could that be the parachute regiment?

    Yes, AAC is the normal designation in the POW lists for Airborne troops such as the Parachute and Glider Pilot Regiments. His Army Number indicates that he was previously in the Hampshire Regiment.

    thats very interesting john ,as my wifes grandad served with the hampshires in malaya !so maybe he returned?eventually gaining a commission as a quarter master,

    Hi My uncle John Dann aged 18, number 14415167 was in the 156 brigade and captured at Arhem - is there any way I can find out what happended to him ? I do know he was sent to Stalag 4b in Germany

    Loks like he was captured and sent to the same concentration camp as my unclue John Dann 14415167 156 Para - are there any photos anywhere? He was 17 when he enlisted into the Black Watch and applied to join the Para's so would have been 18 when he landed at Ginkel Heath DZ
