Excuse my ignorance as I really new to all of this, but I hope to get hold of the BEF War Diary for the 1st Bn Coldstream Guards between Sept 1939 and June 1940. I note there is a transcription on another page, but this appears to be a mixture of 2nd Battalion information (up to April 1940) with the May and Jun pages relating to the 1st Battalion. Any help would be appreciated
Hi, Welcome to the forum? Is this not what you want? I haven’t read it all but Lt Col Cazenove is mentioned in Sept 1939 Officer roll - he was 1st CG OIC - Bootle Wilbraham was OIC 2nd CG in BEF. Steve War Diary, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, BEF - Sep 1939 to Jun 1940
Hi Tullybone, and thank you for the welcome. The post you have really kindly referred to was the post I was referring to. It seem s OK through to December 1939, but I think it looks as if the 2nd Bn diary may have been transcribed between January and April 1940? In January there is a reference to the death of LCPL Nevett who was most definitely 2nd Bn. In March the diary refers to football matches played against the 1st Bn, officers of the 1st Battalion visiting. Further visits by 1st Bn officers (icluding Casenove) are mentioned again in April as well further football matches against the 1st Bn. Im very much hoping to find the missing months (if they are in fact missing)
I think you are correct. I can see mention of the arrival of Captain C P Blacker MC GM as MO 2nd CG in Jan 1940 - I think through the CG “old boy’s” network as he served with Bootle Wilbraham in 4th CG during WW1. BTW Blacker’s WW1 memoirs are well worth a read - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Have-You-F...refinements=p_27:C.+P.+Blacker&s=books&sr=1-2 He served 4th CG 1915/18 before transferring to 2nd CG. From various clues in his book I suspect he was my GF Company Commander 1916/18 in 4th CG. Steve
Sorry, best to check with Drew - and it's in the 1940 forum already. After all this time I'm not able to check.
