My late father Michael Tull served in the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry during the Battle for NW Europe. He remained with the Battalion right the way through the european offensive taking part in the Battalions liberation of Zwolle in Holland. During which he met and subsequently married my late mother. Dad was a tank driver, the Sherman he drove was named 'Kiev'. During his life he never spoke about his service days. Following my mothers recent death whilst clearing the family home, I came across a copy of the history of the N.Y. written by Capt. RF Neville. It would be great to know whether anyone has any information regarding my father, his Sherman 'Kiev' and of which Squadron of the 1st NY he was a member. Oranjedave
Welcome from the Netherlands, if he is not mentioned in the book, maybe the War Diary will give info on him, though most of the time, only officers are mentioned or those who received a medal/award, but it worth checking
Hi, These are the two diaries you would need to look in: WO 171/859 1 Northamptonshire Yeomanry 1944 Jan.- Dec. WO 171/4703 1 Northamptonshire Yeomanry 1945 Jan.- Dec. Cheers Andy
Thanks Andy, Kew is only an hour up A3 from where we are, so may well pay them a visit. Thanks for the diary references.

Oranjedave An excellent source of information about 1St.Northampton Yeomanry can be found in books written by Ken Tout, i.e. TANKS ADVANCE. – (Normandy to the Netherlands TO HELL WITH TANKS – (Holland-Belgium and Germany) BY TANK - (D to VE Days) Ken Tout served with 1.NY as tank crew and graphically describes the experience of war within a Sherman tank. My late father was attached to 1.NY as S/Sgt R.E.M.E. and kept a diary of his time in Europe showing the dates and places of their journey. It was my intention for many years to follow this trail and in 2009 after contacting the 1.NY Association and Ken Tout the decision was made to travel to Normandy for 8th August to coincide with the 65yrs remembrance at the village of St Aignan where I met a handful of the 1.NY veterans in attendance, a very moving experience. After this weekend I continued with my journey through France, Belgium, Holland and on to the Rhine crossing point, this was the end of my father’s journey being hospitalised and returned back to the UK The following year I returned to Normandy and continued my visits to these locations in a greater depth. If you require any help and assistance with contact to the NYA send a pm to me Cheers Ken.
