    Re. Captain James Edgar, R.E.M.E...

    FB_IMG_1645271817015.jpg

There are a few refs in "None Had Lances" p52 "Captain James Edgar R.E.M.E. - Along with Mechanist Sergeant-Major Powell & R.E.M.E. Armament Quartermaster Sergeant Barnes."

Fed 1943 - 2nd Lt. Pat McIver was "posted in to take over from James Edgar" (who was due for promotion).

p54 - however note - a bit later - "James Edgar was still with us" and he appears still in the September 1943 24th Lancer Officers' picture at Bridlington - and is the furthest to the left (as viewed) on the back row here....

    FB_IMG_1645270949546.jpg

Edit - There is a "James Turner EDGAR (265984)" at about the right time in the London Gazettes, although he seemed to be associated with the Royal Artillery, it's perhaps still a (remote) possibility...

24th Lancers at Lakenheath in January 1943...

The three in the middle are Ian Kerr, David Turquand and Robert Hart.

    20220304_184235.jpg

The three above are either officers of whom there are currently no known pictures - Alick Poole, for example - being one such instance perhaps - or alternatively presumably left the 24th Lancers prior to D-Day and subsequently joined other Regiments - serving elsewhere, and may be recognised by someone, someday perhaps...

    Re. Trooper J. (Jack?) Butterworth - 14406083

Gunner/Wireless operator in "B" Squadron of the 24th Lancers.

Wounded with the 24th Lancers in Normandy - 17d6m1944.

And possibly appearing later with 3RTR...

    Re. Trooper A.F. French - 7908340 or 7908346
    (Possibly aka "Eric" French)

Gunner/Wireless operator in "B" Squadron of the 24th Lancers. (As 7908340)
Wounded with the 24th Lancers in Normandy - 11d6m1944. (As 7908346)

Recovered, possibly, as there was an reference to Trooper A. French - 7908346 - later being an unposted reinforcement attached to 37 RHU at the disbandment of the 24th Lancers.

Nb - There is a later "Trooper Eric French" - shown with 3RTR - later in January 1945...
...ex-24th Lancer - Trooper A.F.French - doesn't perhaps - at the moment - seem like a really obvious "match"... but similar to a number of other cases he might just have been known as "Eric", despite his initials apparently being "A.F."

    Re. Dr. Rigg R.A.M.C...

He is mentioned on p186 of NHL as dinning with others in the H.Q. mess.

Otherwise a mystery, as he does not seem to be referenced elsewhere.

He may have been a doctor serving as a 24th Lancer medical officer - for example, or a medical officer for another Regiment who was temporarily serving with the 24th L.

The 24th Lancer MO Douglas Aitken had recently had a few days leave in the Bayeux area, so Dr Rigg may have been his temporary replacement, perhaps.

    Lance Corporal H. Dutchen - 7927926

"HQ" Squadron of the 24th Lancers

Mess Corporal - mentioned a few times in NHL.

He was transferred to "HQ" Squadron - 29th Armoured Brigade on the disbandment of the 24th Lancers.

    Possibly this was him...

Although, alternatively - seen below with Corporal stripes - is perhaps another possibility...

    Trooper D. Wilson - 2764882

Does not appear in the 24L pre-D-Day roll.

He possibly joined the 24L in Normandy as a June/July 1944 replacement.

Transferred to the 4th7thRDG on the disbandment of the 24th Lancers.

Re. Trooper Ronald Harry Carter - 7945614

Wounded "with" the 24th Lancers - 14d3m1944, albeit he was in Italy at the time, then with the same number - Date of Death: Died 22 April 1944.

(NB - There was also an R. Carter with the 24th Lancers - albeit with a differing service number (14318351) - and R. Carter (14318351) was later wounded in Normandy)

There are a few mentions in NHL of an R.Carter (p195) and an R.H.Carter (p122 & 125) although the details/ entries in NHL are perhaps transposed...

    P122 & 125 of NHL relate to the R.Carter (14318351) in Normandy.

P195 of NHL relates to R.H.Carter (7945614) and Naples, Italy...

24th L - War Diary - (on his leaving the Regiment)... has...

20/4/42 2/Lt.J.H.Crane and 2/Lt.A.Wright-Harvey were posted to 51st Training Regiment RAC pending draft. Major D.W.Beaudry and Major W.L.Tomkins of the 27th Canadian Armoured Regiment, The Sherbrook Fusiliers, were attached to the Regiment.

    Edit...

Re. The service number 187276 -

Notices | All Notices | The Gazette...

This number predominantly seems to be assigned to...

    Ronald John Christopher DIAMOND (187276).

Although it's still a bit of a mystery to me why different individuals could seem to have the same service number, although perhaps they did so, at different times.

Roy was my grandfather. It's amazing how much more I learnt about his D Day experience after his sad death. And yes he used to love his Speilberg story
