201st Guards Brigade, 56th (London) Division, 10 Corps
27192 War Substantive Lieutenant-Colonel, Temporary Brigadier Julian Alvery GASCOIGNE, H.Q. 201st Guards Brigade, GRENADIER GUARDS

Brigadier GASCOIGNE was commanding 201st Guards Brigade during the assault on the SALERNO beaches by this Division.

By the evening of 13th September 1943, the Brigade were holding the centre sector of the Divisional front along the main road from BATTIPAGLIA bridge West to the Tobacco Factory and for some distance South from the bridge along to the Northern bank of the TUSCIANO River. Owing to the critical situation on the right, and the very extensive front being held by the Division, it was necessary to re-adjust the front to secure a firmer base.

On the morning of 14th September, I gave Brigadier GASCOIGNE the new line he was to take up. It was appreciated that to extricate his Brigade which was actively and closely engaged with the enemy throughout the whole day would be a difficult and hazardous operation. Without regard, however, to his own personal safety and with great skill, Brigadier GASCOIGNE so successfully recce'd the new area and the approaches leading back to it that from the directions he was able to issue, the whole Brigade was successfully established in the new area soon after nightfall without confusion and with little loss.

Not long after reaching the new position which was admirably laid out, the enemy launched a heavy and determined attack with tanks, armoured cars and infantry, but this was successfully stopped, two or three tanks and many armoured cars being knocked out and the infantry dispersed. Two or three more determined attacks were made by the enemy to break through but all met with the same fate.

The tenacity, coolness and great personal courage of Brigadier GASCOIGNE were a great inspiration to all under his command and were wholly responsible for this very vital position being held intact. The courage, skilful leadership, devotion to duty and above all the undaunted confidence and cheerfulness displayed by Brigadier GASCOIGNE during this critical and trying time were of the highest order and beyond all praise.

Drafted and recommended by Major-General D.A.H. GRAHAM, C.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., Commanding 56th London Division, unable to sign owing to injury to arm.

    Signed Lieutenant-Colonel, A.A. & Q.M.G., 56th London Division.

    Granted an Immediate D.S.O.
