Can anyone help me filling in some details on my grandfather. He served in N. Africa and Italy with the 3rd Bat and was wounded on 8th May 1943. His record also shows that he was issued a "Cert of gallantry in action RO104/43" but no other information as to when or why this was issued. Sadly a visit to Kew is not possible, so any info from the war dairy etc very much appreciated.
Afraid I don't have a copy of the war diary but you could ask if any of the members who regularly go to Kew if they could get you a copy: they charge much less than TNA for services. I'll edit the title for you to see if that grabs attention. In meantime, from The Welsh Guards at War, LF Ellis, pages 123-8, covering the action at Hammam Lif:
Thank you so much, very much appreciated. When I checked the other forums here for listings of the men and their service numbers/gallantry awards etc Leonard Pike does not appear so all help most welcome.
You're welcome, at least the history gives some background to his date of wounding. I've now added your grandfather's name / a link to this thread in my alphabetical list but can't add him to the nominal roll as I don't have his Army Number. Is it noted on any paperwork you have? Edit: Thanks to Tony, Nominal Roll also updated 2737322 L/Sgt Leonard A. PIKE, 3rd Battalion Welsh Guards - copy War Diary?
