    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

The cup relates to 366 Search Light Battery which was part of 42nd Searchlight Regiment RA so is not the same as the subject of this topic

42nd (The Robin Hoods, Sherwood Foresters) Searchlight Regiment RA was a territorial unit formed in August 1940 by the redesignation of 42nd Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Royal Engineers. It was made up of 366th, 367th, 368th and 369th Batteries. They saw action in Home Defence and North Western Europe, notably at Antwerp.

I’ll ask a moderator to create a new topic, with a title 366 Searchlight Battery RA, and move your port and my reply there. It’s a little late for me to do any further research this evening.

    Hi,

Looks like other members have already turned up some information from “open” sources on the internet.

    Robin Hood Battalion - Wikipedia

To fully identify your Grandad’s movements you need to apply to U.K. MOD for his service record.

Get a copy of military records of service

MOD will search their archive for free and contact you to request a fee if they hold the record or sign post you to U.K. National Archives if they have already sent his papers there (there is an ongoing project to send all MOD service files to U.K. NA).

You don’t need an army service number as MOD will search on a full name and DOB only. If he was born less than 116 years ago you also need to provide a death certificate.

Members with access to Findmypast and Ancestry may look for him in the Royal Artillery Attestation Register and in the Royal Engineer and RA Tracer Cards. However if he joined up prior to 1936 - before his unit converted to Searchlight role - there may be no trace in those databases.

    Good Luck.

I always start by checking a Battery or Regiment on Derek Barton's Site ra1939-45.
It often saves finding things on Wiki as he provides useful links.
He is also showing maps and locations whenever he can.
Its not over technical and easy to use.
From a gunner to a gunner or even novice enquirers.
    His RA experience shows.
