Can anyone tell me when 49 Div was moved from XXX Corps to 1 Corps and became part 1 Canadian Army Probably sometime in July 1944 (maybe late June) What was the ORBAT then. Your assistance is appreciated - thank you
I (British) Corps (and other units) were part of the First Canadian Army as list below: First Canadian Army Order of Battle I (British) Corps (August 1, 1944 to April 1, 1945) 6th Airborne Division (to 3 September 1944) 1st Belgian Infantry Brigade (August 10, 1944 to September 10, 1944) 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division 51st (Highland) Infantry Division (to 19 December 1944) 33rd Armoured Brigade (to September 1944) U.S. 104th "Timberwolf" Infantry Division (mid October to early November, 1944) First Canadian Army - Order of Battle | Order Battle
Actually I found the exact record in LAC files, I Corps War Diaries indicate they came under command of the First Canadian Army on the 23 July 1944 at 1200 hours Department of National Defence, Directorate of ... - Héritage And the 49th Div came under command of I Corps os the 21 July, as note in I Corps War Diaries below Department of National Defence, Directorate of ... - Héritage
Can’t beat the primary sources. I was about to say that the Wikipedia entry for 49th Div shows it as 25 July - citing Joslen, H. F. (2003) [1990]. Orders of Battle: Second World War, 1939–1945, (Uckfield, East Sussex: Naval and Military Press). I’d be interested to know what Joslen’s source was!
I found this - two volumes a bit too pricey for me. Publisher Naval & Military Press LTD ISBN-13 9781843424741 eBay Product ID (ePID) 91507172 Product Key Features Author H.F. It’s pretty specialist stuff, but for £25 in softcover it’s a bargain compared to this second hand hard copy: Orders of Battle. United Kingdom and Colonial Formations and Units in the Second World War 1939-1945. Prepared for the Historical Section of the Cabinet Office. Based on Official Documents. [Third Impression]. NEAR FINE SET IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPERS by JOSLEN: (1974) | Island Books £186! it’s cheaper to rely on the good nature of knowledgeable folks on here.
