My subject served with (as written on his record) 8th Army Signals from May 1943 to Sep 1945. I can find no war diaries under a variety of combinations of titles. Help gratefully received! Max
Have you looked under titles such as Areas: HQ North Africa District: Chief Signal Officer (CSO) | The National Archives Reference: WO 169/9077 Description: Areas: HQ North Africa District: Chief Signal Officer (CSO) Date: 1943 July- Dec. Held by: The National Archives, Kew Legal status: Public Record(s) Closure status: Open Document, Open Description Access conditions: Closed For 29 years within this series perhaps Browse records of other archives | The National Archives TD
Thank you for your suggestion but knowing the way the hierarchy terminology works, the term District usually refers to something more on the administrative side rather than the operational. 8th Army must refer to a top level HQ. The answer will indeed be found in the WO 169 series but as none of them include the specific term 8th Army, his unit must be under "hidden" under any one of those either in the GHQ series or the Royal Signals series. Stop press. Just seen more of my subject's record. This states that 4 LofC Signals (which he was in before "8th Army Sigs") was "re-designated 8th Army Signals" in July 1942. In the WO 169 series the title goes on past that date. More work need on those. Max
You've probably tracked it all down by now but Eighth Army Signals may be found searching Discovery for 'Eighth Army' or 8 Army'.
