Hello, We have adopted a grave from the Overloon British War Cemetery and are seeking information from VIII Corps RA, the 91st Anti-Tank Regiment in particular. The soldier was injured in the vicinity of Boxmeer/Overloon and died. All information is welcome. There is a book: History of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion, 91st Anti-Tank Regiment 1939-45 written by Major Desmond Flower, released in 1950. It contains 2 chapters: XV Overloon & Venray and XVI The Maas. Can someone help us get a copy of the chapters so maybe we can find out where he has been injured. Henk
I have the book, but there is no mention of any casualties at Overloon. Flowers was BC of 146 Battery. What is the name of the sopldier and date he died?
His name is Cartlidge, C.W. He was a gunner in the 91 Anti-Tank Regiment. He died 10-11-1944 of wounds in Stevensbeek near Overloon and Boxmeer. This is the region of the Maas.
Henk, Welcome aboard. This is a fascinating website and usually we can help, though it may take a little time. A member's website is always a starting point for the Royal Artillery. Sheldrake has posted already. See: 91 (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) Anti-Tank Regiment RA (TA) - The Royal Artillery 1939-45 Please add the soldier's details and the date of his death - added whilst typing as 10/11/1944; it is possible he is subject of a thread and to cover the possibility that his family's descendants check in - which happens almost every week. The CWGC is the obvious source. You are in luck an American member also has the book, he will need the date to help. See: History of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 5th Battalion (91st Anti-Tank Regiment) 1939-45 There are five other threads on the unit id'd by the tag system it appears that is all: 91 anti tank regiment ra | WW2Talk and three when using A&S. See: 5 argyll and sutherland highlanders | WW2Talk I only looked at the one referring to the book sought. The only other, relevant thread with Stevensbeek is this, on the Overloon Museum: Overloon Museum
Hello Henk, Please see the image below from the war diary of 344 Battery, 91 Anti-Tank Regiment. The entry for 1200 hours on 10th November reads: "Sharp enemy arty fire area 7536. Tpr Cartilage killed whilst guiding water truck." 344 Battey were one of 91 Anti-Tank Regiment's towed troops, issued with 17 pounder guns towed by Crusader Gun Tractors.

Hello everyone, an update. In 1944 the British Army named Stevensbeek: Lactaria. Lactaria was created in 1910, became in 1934 Stevensbeek and belonged to the municipality of Sambeek. Christopher did not die in Sambeek but Stevensbeek. On 5 November 1944, Major Richard Collier Peltzer (War Diary Nov. 1944/ Unit: CA HQ VIII Corps) ordered the 3rd British Infantry Division to guard the area between the Venray-Cuijk railway line. Battery 344 of the 91st Anti-Tank Regiment, under the command of the 3rd British Infantry, guards the area between Overloon and Boxmeer. (Battery 146 guard the area Beugen.) Boxmeer and Beugen are located on the Maas. 91st Anti-Tank Regiment RA (Battery 144-145-146-344) and 63rd Anti-Tank Regiment RA (Battery 249-250-251-252) On December 6, 1944: 91st and 63rd became 63rd Anti-Tank Regiment RA (Battery 144-146-249-251) WO 171/920 - 63 Anti-Tank Regiment - December 1944 - TracesOfWar.com Henk
