Some photos I took on a walk yesterday, inspired by the excellent article by Nikos Valasiadis which appeared in After the Battle issue 189. ‘Then and nows’ of a staged surrender in Crete, photographed by Franz Peter Weixler. If that name sounds familiar, Weixler was the photographer who accompanied Horst Trebes to Kondomari and photographed the subsequent massacre there. The POWs are from 1/Welch Regiment, who along with the Rangers and Northumberland Hussars formed Freyberg’s ‘Force Reserve’. The FJ officer leading his men in the first photo and seated looking to the camera in the second is Major Edgar Stenzler, commander of II.Bataillon Luftlande-Sturm-Regiment.
