On this day 30th April 1945 Adolf Hitler shot himself dead in his underground bunker beneath the Chancellery In Berlin. Eva Braun, who he had married the previous day, died beside him after taking a cyanide pill. Graham.
I was reading recently that he may have taken a pill as well, then shot himself to be sure, to be sure.
The front cover of the Time issue that named Hitler ‘Man of the Year’ 1938. A mere year before he led Germany to war, Time magazine bestowed the title of “Man of the Year” on Hitler. It’s important to note however, that the award isn’t always meant as an endorsement. Indeed, Time claims that the title is more a measure of newsworthiness and impact, which explains why fellow recipients of the dubious accolade include Stalin, Khruschchev and Ayatollah Khomeini.
History is strange sometimes. Time making Hitler man of the year! I'll add to that the Irish government expressing official condolences to Germany on Hitler's death. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/hitler-s-death-hyde-also-expressed-condolences-1.1288650
Thanks for the reminder Graham, I had almost forgotten to celebrate (well, perhaps not the EB bit though)
We are having a nice bottle of French red wine tonight with our supper. Liz said "what are we celebrating " I said "it's a nice day today". Graham.
It's a lovely day tomorrow Tomorrow is a lovely day Come and feast your tear dimmed eyes On tomorrow's clear blue skies If today your heart is weary If ev'ry little thing looks gray Just forget your troubles and learn to say Tomorrow is a lovely day It's a lovely day tomorrow Tomorrow is a lovely day Come and feast your tear dimmed eyes On tomorrow's clear blue skies If today your heart is weary If ev'ry little thing looks gray Just forget your troubles and learn to say Tomorrow is a lovely day
From a reliable source Hugh Trevor- Roper, Hitler shot himself through the mouth while Braun took the cyanide poison pill although a revolver was found by her side. Hitler's body was carried out in a blanket to cope with severe blood loss from the shattered head.Braun was carried out of the bunker with no need for a shroud. "Der Chef ist tote" was the message passed around by Hitler's personal servants. Most interesting in the aftermath of der chefs suicide was the attempt by Hitler's remaining circle (Goebbels and Bormann having been appointed to positions in in Hitler's will ) to parley with the Marshal Zukhov using General Hans Krebs as the messenger with the intention of achieving a treaty whereby a Nazi or semi Nazi government would be accepted by the Russians...a forlorn hope. Meanwhile in Flensburg, Himmler had similar ideas for a discussion with the West Allies to establish a reformed Nazi administration in Schleswig Holstein whereby he would enter peace negotiations with the Western Allies.
