I expect to be visiting Chester for a few days in mid June and was wondering what there was to see of military/history interest in the city ? I have not been since, er, the early 1970s so don't recall much - although there is some Roman stuff, yes ?

I see there is a military museum at the Castle, which is maybe worth a rummage.

    Good second hand bookshops ?

    Cheers !

Only been there a couple of times myself China ... Roman wall is interesting, lots of tudor buildings and stuff. Can't help with the book shops, but the pubs are great, especially the one by the canal.

Thanks Blacksnake and Drew..fair dos. Ah yes pub recommendations also very welcome...what is the local brew ?

Mind you, the chap I am visiting there - a former mate in Shanghai - is a hotelier by trade and can be relied to find decent ale anywhere !

Can't help you with recommendations for second hand bookshops and I wasn't even aware of a military museum in Chester ?

There are some good places to eat and drink in though, and a walk around the roman city wall is a must do when you are there.

I suspect that even after 30 something years, since your last visit, you will recognise the place as it has hardly changed in that time.

If you're interested...there is a shop in the indoor market in the city centre that sells militaria. He sells repro and genuine items and has a lot of british medals for sale.

    Enjoy your stay.

I'd go with the local knowledge if I where you China ... From what I remember Real Ale and Bitter are the specialties.

    Hi China Hand

As a Cestrian, now exiled, I can strongly recommend the Albion pub in the city centre. Good beer & food, and it's kitted out as pub used to be ,none of your modern rubbish. Heres a link for the Albion The Albion Inn Chester

Lots and Lots of Roman stuff to see as well and there is the military museum too. The zoo is good if you like that sort of thing.

    Cheers

As a frequent visitor to Chester, Chester is a beautiful city, full of black and white timber frame buildings. It does get very busy and the parking is quite expensive, but worth every penny.
The Grosvenor Shopping Centre, I believe has a tourist info desk, which may be of help whilst there.
Watergate Street holds a few Antique shops which do some militaria. I replaced my Dad's Burma Star Medal from one of the Antique shops, when it was mislaid some years ago.
There is, as previously said, the Roman Walls which surround Chester - quite a good walk and a couple of areas have been know for ghostly sightings of centurions.
Chester Cathedral is also open to visitors.
If you go on to Google Maps and look at the satellite map of Chester there is also something called 'panaramio', which are pictures of various areas of Chester you can click on to enlarge on the map itself.
Hope you have a good time and enjoy your visit.

    CH,

Chester is a beautiful city as has already been pointed out.

I do not know if it is still there as it is several years since my last visit, but there was a good second hand book shop on the main street where the clock is built over the street.

When coming from the clock towards the cathedral it was on the left on the first floor above street level.

    Have a great time.

    Regards
    Tom

Thanks for all that :) This is great - WW2T should advertise itself as a tourist advice forum as well :D

Happy to reciprocate if anyone ever ventures north of Hadrian's Wall ;)

The castle musumn is worth a go, but to be honest the best you can do is go for a walk round the walls. You can walk the full lenght (except for a little bit that is closed off at the moment) it takes about an hour, I never tire of it. Great views of a the canal, river and race course.

There is a cheapy end of line bookshop in the grovner (??) shopping centre too.

Parking is bit of a nightmare so park and ride if you dont know yor way round.

I remember parking on a DIY carpark just off the ring in the centre when coming from the M6.

Free parking and only minutes from the centre!:D

DOnt be tempted to park in any shop car parks virtaully all of them have resident clamper who will be more than happy to let you get out of earshot befre tell you where you can pay your 70 quid to have your car unclamped.

If yuou must park go i on the Hoole rd from the M56/3 and as you enter the city you wil cross the main railway (narrow bridge) at the light turn right (by machie mart) there is a pay and disply thats only a few quid only 5 mins walk from town, Charlie williams (famous bike racer) shop is nearby if you find a sudden need to buy a necxk tube.
