'Super blue blood Moon' spectacle The night sky has a display in store on Wednesday, 31 January, with a lunar event being called the "Super blue blood moon". For Australia, Asia and some parts of the US and Eastern Europe, there will be a lunar eclipse, as the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. On the very same night, our only natural satellite enters its closest point to us in its elliptical orbit. It will also be the second full Moon of the month, commonly called a blue moon. The word "blood" has been used to describe the deep red colour of the sunlight that passes through Earth's atmosphere to illuminate our celestial neighbour. ...
Space lab will fall to Earth 'within hours' The estimated window of re-entry for the defunct Chinese space lab Tiangong-1 has narrowed sharply. The timeframe for the fall to Earth is centred on 01:07 Monday GMT (02:07 BST), plus or minus two hours. Experts are tracking the module as it orbits at an ever decreasing altitude. However, they will only be sure of the timing of the final plunge very late in the descent because of the uncertainties over Tiangong's interactions with the high atmosphere. China has lost communication with the module and there is no way to control its downward flight. However, the risk of any parts of Tiangong hitting a populated area is considered very low. ...

Hope you've got your hot water bottle and triple sleeping bags for a few hours time, Clive. The trouble with the moon is that by the time it changes colour it won't be so easy for me to view from indoors ! John ( apologies for the double posting of the roof picture )
Love the roof Just like winter should be Ground frozen hard this morning Super moon did not bring the end of the world having said that on piccadilly line and there are a few zombies
In pictures: 'Super blood wolf moon' Stargazers have been scanning the skies for sightings of a highly unusual lunar eclipse, which began on Sunday night. During the spectacle, known as a "super blood wolf moon", the moon appears to glow red while seeming brighter and closer to Earth than normal. The event was initially visible from North and South America, as well as areas of western Europe. In parts of the UK some clouds obscured the view. ... All the phases of the so-called super blood wolf moon, seen here from Panama City Joe Sheridan, who completed a photography degree three years ago aged 60, plans to enter this in the Washington Camera Club competition in the north east of England.
Our days are getting longer and the moon is getting further away every year... Articles in "Sky at Night" magazine... (the "you never knew" headline is a bit presumptuous though ;-) 17 facts you never knew about astronomy and space What are the weirdest stars in the Universe? 9 of the most mind-blowing facts about the Universe What are the biggest objects in the Universe? Edit: I think that they subsequently reconsidered and changed the Fb post to: ;-) "17 facts you probably never knew about astronomy and space": 17 facts you never knew about astronomy and space Given it's an astronomy mag "probably" ;-) read by at least some astronomers it's probably for the best
