Award Military Cross 1st Lt. William Priest, Company "M," 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, VII Corps (01309395)

On 10th December 1944 while his battalion was engaged in a heavy firefight near Strass, Germany. First Lieutenant PRIEST was supervising the evacuation of a large number of prisoners to a rear area when his group was suddenly attacked by approximately thirty rifleman, supported by fire from machine funs and a self propelled weapon. Displaying marked valour and unselfish devotion to duty, he ordered his guards to withdraw with the prisoners and with the aid of a rifleman, placed accurate and intense covering fire upon the enemy, killing twelve Germans and forcing the remainder to retreat. The heroism and exemplary actions of First Lieutenant PRIES resulted in the safe evacuation of his men and prisoners.
