britishwargraves.co.uk - a little project

Discussion in 'War Grave Photographs' started by Sherwood Forester, Feb 22, 2009.

  1. Hi All,

I hope i am not contravening any Forum rules by making everyone aware of a project being undertaken by a friend and myself.

My Friend, Mick and I began britishwargraves.co.uk when the old British War Memorial Project floundered- we were both very active volunteers and had several thousand photos that we had not donated with no where to place them. The website was therefore born....

If anyone wants any photos, admittedly most are at present from the Great War in France and Belgium but more are being added constantly, please send us an email and the photo(s) will duly follow.

All photos we take and send are free, the project is run and paid for by ourselves as we are passionate about the remembrance of those who fell.

I hope this will be of use to others

Hello Anthony -- I am delighted to see this link and learn of your work. I am trying to detail the war dead of our community here in Canada and so shall spend some time sorting out my Great War chap's locations. If I am half as successful as I have been with the lads here in this Forum, I will be overjoyed.

cheers and best wishes on your efforts.

    Hi Anthony,

What a great service to the relatives and others that these photos will be available to all.

Have you photographed an Australian AFC/RFC/RNAS/RAAF/RAF from both wars?

I have set myself the task of collecting photographs of the Headstones and Memorials of the 11,037 Australians in the RAAF/RAF who died during WW2 (1080 cemeteries in 65 countries) as well as the 330 who died in WW1 which are remembered in 157 Cemeteries/Memorials in 12 countries.

I am looking to have the bulk of my collection on line and available by BoB day 2010 for the 70th anniversary. Australians in the RAF were in Britain for the declaration of war and began losing their lives very soon after that date. Similarly to yours, they will be available free to all who require them, as their deeds should always be remembered.

My project pales into insignificance compared to yours however I have only been collecting for 18 months and have achieved nearly 6,000 from WW2 and 201 from WW1.

The response to my project from forum members has been absolutely unbelievable.

I do not have a lot of British photos (you already have the ones from Adelaide River which I photographed last year.

I photographed Springvale Cemetery in Victoria about a month ago and have most from there which have headstones and a couple in Albury New South Wales and possibly some others and can send them to you if you wish without copyright limitations.

    Good luck with your project.

    Cheers

    Geoff

  10. Hi Geoff,

Thanks for your interest and comments. Great project you are undertaking, i for one am looking forward to the result!

We do photograph the Australian graves but only if Matt Smith from the Australian project does not have them- if he doesn't we send them to add to his project.

We try and work alongside the other projects the best we can as their projects have been ongoing for many years and we don't see the point of duplicating photos when they are available. We also didn't want to step on others toes.

Thanks for the offer of the photos, they would be gratefully received and will add them to the site with pleasure.

    Thanks again for your interest

I did speak with Matt Smith early days to no avail so I decided to go about collecting my own. To pay for them would have been out of the question. I will continue to source those that I require through other sources.

Let me know by PM where I can send the British ones that I have and those that I photograph in the future.

    Cheers

A very interesting site with a lot of potential, are you using a CMS? If not you should look into one, as your database gets larger a CMS will make it easier to manage.

  14. Forgive my ignorance, but what is CMS? I don't yet deal with the technical aspect of the site and can't answer this!! Sorry

  19. Tony,

Thank you for your comments. Glad you received the photo so quickly- Mick generally checks the requests a few times a day so it isn't long until they are received and the photo sent.
