Apparently its all Winston Churchills fault ! A factoid today on the Steve Wright Show said that the Danes brewed the lager as a thank you to Winston Churchill when he visited Denmark after the war.
I once had a very bad night because of that awful stuff. See, I told you ........Winston Churchills fault
Back not so long ago when I drunk, I got a taste for this stuff.......... got to be really cold and on a summers day it really hit the spot.............and then your head

In Tescos a while back they started describing their Lagers like the winos do their stuff.... Tennetts Super, apparently, is 'for the discerning drinker'
In Tescos a while back they started describing their Lagers like the winos do their stuff.... Tennetts Super, apparently, is 'for the discerning drinker' I like that, not the tennants that is, when i lived in NYC you used to see loads of people unconcsious in the park drinking special brew out of brown paper bags. Maybe the danes still hold a grudge? Now elephant beer (% above special brew) is a nice strong carlsberg lager. Very rare in the UK though!
My mate loves the stuff but I've never liked it. My dad used to be the Steward of a social club when I was younger and as I lived on the premises, I had full access to the beer cellar. Of all the drinks I must have pinched over the years, that was the one drink I always left alone. Just never liked the taste. Too strong.
when I briefly worked as a youth worker the alcohol and drug experts used to advise that strong lager (anything stronger than stella, for example) is more dangerous than smoking weed. Unless someone is smoking tons of the stuff and ending up paranoid or they've got an underlying medical condition stoned people tend to chill out, whereas stella and special brew seems to make people want to fight. I've talked this over with a lot of people, and you dont seem to see people brawling when they've been out on the lager in Germany - I suspect its cos whereas our beer here is loaded with chemicals they have laws that mean brewers can only use natural ingredients. Anyone thoughts from anyone who's been based in Germany?
I like the misprunt here: Carlsberg Group - Carlsberg Special Brew Special Brew was originally brewed by the Danes for Winston Churchill. His visit to Copenhagen in 1950 was commemorated with a 'special' brew produced in his honour. Originally called V-øllet (V-Beer), the drink followed the Danish tradition of producing a new beer to celebrate outstanding events such as a royal occasion or European coronation. Churchill's favourite drink was cognac, so in brewing him a commemorative beer, the brewers at Carlsberg created a stronger lager with cognac flavours among its tasing notes. At Christmas in 1952 Special Brew was launched throughout Denmark, and has been available in the UK since the '70's. Special Brew is a full bodied, fruity tasting, strong lager with a good clean bitterness. A liquid Taser indeed... The thought of Diamond White & Special Brew Snakebite, with a shot of Pernod in it... takes me back to Saturday nights in Pompey.
Not my kind of beer, too strong for my taste. :P I was not aware of this actually. I'm surprised my mate who works at Carlsberg hasn't mentioned this considering he knows i'm a big Churchill fan! Jakob
In Sept 88 when in Denmark we had a tour of the Tuborg Brewery in Copenhagen. That was really boring. TUBORG
Just never liked the taste. Too strong. Not my kind of beer, too strong for my taste. :P What a bunch of weenies, try the Belgian "Duvel" (pron. "Tuifel"=Devil) 14% strong, treacherous as heck! Drunk two in a row, when I was coming off thebar stool my legs had gone elsewhere

James You must never had spent a weekend on the beer in Munster Squddies drinking fighting and generally have a good-time never any fun if you where on duty in the BMH patching up the lads, when you wish you where enjoying a night on the binge yourself

Drunk two in a row, when I was coming off thebar stool my legs had gone elsewhere N'n Duvel is only 8.5% Za, that's a 'session beer' in this part of the world ! ...and it's a proper top fermented ale, not like that nasty metallic 'Special Spew' I wonder if old Winston was chuffed with having a lager named after him ? I can't quite imagine him drinking it.
On strong beer, anyone remember this? : ELDRIDGE POPE THOMAS HARDY'S ALE - HISTORY OG 1125 & counting; We used to mix it half and half with Gold Label 'Barley Wine' (to soften the THA's syrupy texture) in one of those 'middle of nowhere' country pubs in Hampshire (no bar, beers used to come up the cellar steps - forget the name), lovely/killer stuff. Found a bottle while clearing the attic... it's making me go 'hmmm'.
