Been looking around for some reports of anything that took place in Italy this month around the time of the Cassino breakout anniversary and finally found this: Soldiers gather at Monte Cassino to remember 'forgotten battle' - Telegraph This is the veteran myself and Owen met last year: Ted Doyle MM, Royal Fusiliers, 4th Division. This is my pic of him last year:
Paul - while some of the more gruesome sights and sounds still impinge on the memory banks - my abiding memory of Cassino is waiting to move up at Presenzaro when there was lull in the noise of hundreds of guns - and the song of the Nightingale filled the air......civilisation again ! Cheers
That must have been quite something, Tom. An old Great War veteran I knew always recalled the Skylarks as the bombardment lifted at Zero Hour on the First Day of the Somme.
Paul - It was indeed a remarkable event as it told me that in the midst of all the madness and killing and maiming - civilisation still held supreme over all of us - I felt that it was great omen and that I would survive ! Cheers
Hi, I am Ted’s granddaughter. I’m 24 and have been looking into his history. It’s something he told me a lot about growing up, but I’ve got a resurgence in interest as its coming up to 8 years since he passed away. I saw a battalion picture on here somewhere but cannot find it - it was posted with reference to John Dudley his dear friend. I spotted my grandad on the front row and would love to print it out for my mother. Molly
