This may seem like a stupid question, but how much choice did conscripted men get in the regiment they were assigned to? I know that volunteers were able to choose (I have a HMSO leaflet from January 1939 showing a brief outline of each regiment and an application form) but men called up under the various conscription acts - did their choice end at Army, Navy or Air Force?
