32 Guards Brigade, Guards Armoured Division, 30 Corps 2660552 Guardsman (Unpaid Lance-Corporal) Hector Robertson DODDS, 5th Battalion COLDSTREAM GUARDS This NCO was in charge of the stretcher bearers attached to a rifle Company in his Bn throughout the whole campaign and during that time there is no doubt that thanks to his utter disregard for his own safety and very high sense of devotion to duty he saved the lives of many of his comrades and lessened the suffering of many others. Of the many cases possible to cite for outstanding bravery two must suffice as illustrations. During his Coys attack against the SIEGRIED LINE at MULL on 16 Feb 1945 his HQ received a direct hit with a shell which wounded two of the stretcher bearers and badly shook this NCO. However, he at once rendered first aid to the right forward platoon who had just suffered the loss of one complete section by enemy MMG fire. Cpl DODDS had to cross this hostile fire himself before he could reach the wounded men and this he did without the slightest hesitation. On arrival a heavy smoke concentration was put down on to this pl locality, but despite all this Cpl DODDS continued moving from man to man until all had been dealt with. On 11 April 1945 this NCOs Coy were lining the bank of the river HAZE prior to forcing a crossing at another place. The Coy were under heavy and accurate small arms fire and movement appeared impossible. Casualties were being suffered and each time the call came for stretcher bearers this NCO went without any hesitation and amidst a hail of bullets from at least two enemy MMGs from across the river. Apart from these exploits on behalf of his own Coy the opportunity twice came for him to help the men of other Regiments, and on both occasions his action was gratefully brought to my notice by the Commanding Officers concerned. The first occasion was the expensive attack by the IRISH GUARDS through us, south of HOMMERSUM, and the second was on the 9th March 1945 when the SCOTS GUARDS began the assault on the WESEL bridgehead when their centre line was cut with their RAP Staff separated from their forward companies. This Cpl did al that could be done to make good their loss. Recommended for Periodic M.M. Field, 4 August 1945. LG 24 Jan 1946

2636190 Lance-Sergeant Richard SUMNER, 2 Bn Coldstream Guards 1st Guards Brigade, 78th Division, 5th Corps This NCO commanded a section during the night attack on LONG STOP HILL on 22/23 Dec 42, when his Pl came under very heavy M.G. fire. L/Sgt Sumner with 2 men located and attacked this M.G. post which they captured; he then brought the captured gun back into action against the enemy, and continued to fire the gun until all the enemy amn was finished.
