Does anyone know if any records exist for this time when some of 77 th Brigade were evacuated after Maugung. Presumably for medical help and recovery. Looking for Lanc Fus in particular. But probably a record of the depot would have been made? Thanks

    Hi zahonado,

If the men went up to Dehra Dun, then it was probably to stay at the Clement Town Cantonment. I'm at work right now, I'll have a dig through some notes when I get back home.

Well I'm back again! With not much to show sadly.

I had some odds and ends from 1944 files from TNA.

The attached images are from WO172/4395 (I think). They show that most of 111, 77 and 16th Brigades were recuperating at Clement Town, Dehra Dun. You can see the location written in the top righthand corner of some of the pages.

In October it seems from the pages that it was decided to re-arrange the make up of the Brigades, the 1 LF's (what was left of them) went over to 16th Brigade which was to be held in reserve.

By late November the men who had qualified for 'Python' were gathering for the journey down to Deolali and repatriation

An image for December shows a large group being sent back to the Central Provinces for continued Special Forces training.

I hope these give you something.

There is a medical file at the National Archives for 77th Brigade, ADMS WO177/1958. I have never looked at it, but it might give detail on where the men recovered from 'Thursday'.

    Steve :)

Thanks for those ...not quite what I was looking for but interesting anyway. My Dad didn't get Python till Nov 1945. I am very confused about the brigade numbers and changes. In Jan 1945 he was in Lucknow where he describes the Lanc Fus mess closing , moving briefly to the mess of the 10th Lanc Fus then getting a new job with the IFBU under the SOE I believe. Still looking for more documentation, though thanks to you and HC I have all the 77 documents for Op THursday, White City and Mogaung. Re reading Sunbeam like swords (Jeffrey) which although about 50col initially seems to cover much the same ground. Will ask the regular Kew visitors to get th medical file, thanks for the number!

There's probably some more items that might be of use in the 3rd Indian diaries but they're a monster I haven't yet tamed - I just did a quick properties check and there are over 5k images; many of them double pages...

3rd Indian were the command structure for 77 and 111 Brigades, amongst others, for those that might not know...

Covering the same ground can be comforting as it often confirms information by cross-referencing, and occasionally expands upon it...
