hey guys i am new to this forum ^^ i just start reading about this book call "The Long Walk" Does anyone know what is "Positively Homeric" mean /?? Cyril connoly , a critic, who describle the book positively homeric
Usually means writing in a style like Homer the greek poet did in his verse. Or intimating that the people in the book were positively Heroic!
Welcome to the Forum cheungy. Homer wrote several epics. Homer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/2471/Troy.html I'd say to describe something as "Positively Homeric" would imply it was epically heroic.
So the meaning of positively homeric mean the author wrote like the greek ? or it mean himself and his 6 other fellows ? the story is like this setting - RUS , the speaker is polish (during this period 1939-1941 ) he got into concentration camp and sentence 25 (he was innocent RUS believe he was spy ...) cuz WW2 ... he escape the camp with 6 other fellows and walked from RUs all the way down to india. Between his journey , he saw yeti , big bears ; he also walk thought deserts , HImamile mountain Oo ... with ONLY 1 week of supply so the critic is describing the act they have done ? or the writing style ?
Connolly meant it as a compliment in both it's writing style and the fact that it was an heroic tale in the tradition of the Iliad and The Odyssey. Connolly was a literary critic to whom the way that the story is presented is as important as the actual drama and adventure itself. The fact that the book's "honesty" has been questioned since would probably not have affected Connolly's actual review: Have a look here If you want to know more Connolly just google his name - there's plenty out there
