Look on the bottom left side of the attachment the name in parenthesis after HMS GIBRALTAR, NAIRN and WALLINGTON. Look also third line now in that column.

Google is your friend with the ship names Louse. Also try Ships Nostalgia site - Ships Nostalgia
He appears to be no longer a registered Merchant Seaman for at least 5 years prior to 1933. Although it is possible that he went back after 1933 but there appears to be no record to back that up.

    Regards

Ok , seen it thanks Hugh. Bit confusing where and when the way it's written.
Was he on all those boats though? Seems like a lot in such a short time.

Do you mean the WWI ships or the MN ships?

The WW1 record includes his admin bases such as HMS WALLINGTON - the auxiliary base for the Humber at Immingham.
HMS NAIRN was the auxiliary patrol parent/depot ship for (Peterhead and Aberdeen).
HMS GIBRALTAR was the depot ship for the Northern Patrol at Shetland.

    Hi Hugh,
Meant WW1 ships. The MN documents were just the actual boats. You are very knowledgeable , things like admin bases and depot ships that i never knew existed.
I'm sure alot of my questions may seem evident for you but for someone who is new to all of this , like me, it's not evident at all, so once again thanks.
So most of WW1 on a boat named HMT Grosbeak, which was a trawler/minesweeper but based out of different admin bases. Does that mean his boat operated also up by Perterhead and aberdeen?

    Hi Louise,

No worries - that's what forums are for - you ask a question and hopefully you get some answers.
HMT GROSBEAK was launched in 1910 and requisitioned by the Admiralty in August 1914 and converted to a minesweeper. She was returned to owners in 1919.

I forgot to mention HMS GUNNER which was a shore base at Granton on the Firth of Forth. It is not clear on his service record but he would probably have been attached to that base while on GROSBEAK as well. The ship was transferred to different operational areas so the account may have changed to reflect.

Some usefull information here: S.T. Grosbeak LO249 | The Bosun's Watch

Hi Hugh, looking again at WW1 RNR record , the first entry says Pembroke. I've googled HMS Pembroke ( HMS NYMPH originally)and come up with that it was a shore training ship at sheerness.
    Am i right?
I've traced the johnson's back to sheerness , grandad's grandad and great grandad were both in the Navy and from sheerness

    Hi Louise,
HMS PEMBROKE was the Royal Navy Barracks at Chatham. During its time it had many base ships - HMS NYMPHE being base ship from 1917 - 1920.
Also in the record is PEMBROKE I which was another accounting base.
    Regards
    Hugh
