Old guys like me will remember and probably have this fine weekly history. All things considered I think it has travelled quite well over the years , does anyone else have any views on how it. In terms of quality of content and production I think it was hard to beat. A sure sign of the aging process - "rose tinted glasses"
James, I had a full collection of Purnells History of the Second World War, which I purchased from a local ad in the paper in the mid 1970`s. I obtained binders from the publishers and it served me well for many years. Alas, when I moved to Germany I hired a Large Diesel Mercedes Double rear wheeled Sprinter, which although large was not large enough to fit everything. The Heavy books had to be left behind, together with another collection of War monthly. I offered them around and had no takers and so they ended up on the local municipal tip, much to my regret. I found them to be very informative and have very good fond memories of reading them. Pity I was not a member of the forum then, as I could have offered them a free home. Some things in life you regret, this was one such moment for me. Regards Tom
I have a full set boxed in my Ex Wifes loft along with several over weekly publications one being 20 odd volumes of The illustrated encyclopedia of Aircraft (I think thats what its called). I'm dreading the day she moves and says can you collect all your crap......I've got nowhere to put it !
Andy, I do sympathise with you. Storage can be a problem unless you have spare cash to rent a storage place. Regards Tom
Tom et al I had a full collection of Purnells History of the Second World War, which I purchased from a local ad in the paper in the mid 1970`s. Moi aussi I'd religously collected the full set but as my grandchildren grew in number and in size and as the bookshelves filled up with their photos, she who must be obeyed asked me to create some space. The local scouts annual fund raising fete was glad to take the whole, bound, collection and all I kept were the Chronologies for 1933-1944 and 1944-1049. See below for the years 1938 & 1939 Cheers Ron
i was a young kid then in the early 70's in the philippines and my dad had this almost complete set of the weekly magazines. he told me it had been sold to him by a gentleman who needed money. i read that magazine over and over again and even now that i am in my mid-40's i can still remember logistical information that i read more than 30 years ago. even now i still enjoy watching the military channel on cable.
I still have my set and use it for research. Even though the articles were written pre the release of Ultra the insights offered are valid and on the whole balanced. I bought mine as a job lot in a 2nd hand bookstore in NZ and am only missing the issue on Market Garden - don't suppose anyone has a spare to sell? Macca
