Yes I agree that it is Service of Supply/Army Service Forces. In WW2 the US Army consisted of Army Ground Forces, Army Air Forces and Army Service Forces, which provided a range of services for the other two. Rather than a variant I think the photo has been colourised by someone who was good with faces but knew little of uniforms. Thus the badge was coloured with gold star and border instead of the blue and red. Mike
