    Hi,

At the end of the war, my uncle was a driver in an RASC Company in Newport, Monmouthshire. The war diaries for the company show that his platoon was sent to 'No 8 Dispersal Unit, Hereford' on 3rd Aug 1945.

My father was also a driver was in The Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers at Monmouth. He was an ex POW and returned to work at Stroud, Gloucestershire in May 1945. His war records show that on 9th Aug 1945, he was assigned to 'No 8 Chilwell (MT) group'. There was no indication where this was. I am wondering if it was also at Hereford.

There are a few additional clues in the RASC war diary. The CO was clearly a man who did not not tolerate fools gladly. He had been given lorries, without drivers. He pointed out to his superiors that 'lorries need drivers' and 'drivers need accommodation'. Consequently, in September 1945, the RASC moved out of Raglan Barracks, Newport to a former Royal Artillery base, which occupied high ground at Penylan, above Castleton, which lies between Cardiff and Newport. Clearly it had been used to defend both ports during the war. The Royal Engineers were busy there from September 1945 to December 1945, providing the extra accommodation.

Any comments would be much appreciated, thanks.

    Hi,

Chilwell was in Nottinghamshire not Herefordshire - a large military ordnance base.

My father was also a returning POW who was posted there in late summer 1945 for a short period after 3 months repatriation leave.

Gordon, I meant to add my aunt served at Chilwell with the ATS until 1946. Here's my old thread which includes a picture of the barracks. The buildings still exist.

I just received a book called No Time for Tears, written by an ATS officer about her time there. There are a few photos in the book which I will scan in and add to Naomi's thread at some point.
