My kingdom for a nightfighter

I think, what has happened, is that the difference between Nightfighters and night intruders has become somewhat blurred.

The RAF had specialist nightfighter units because they had expereiced night attacks. RAF nightfighters also flew with the bommber forces on occassions and later in the war, they turned their attention to interdiction of enemy air assests.

The American had no need for Nightfighters in their forces in Britian because they were provided by the RAF. Therefore they could concentrate on the Night intruder role.
Agreed, but they were not called night intruders. The Black Widows are called night fighters. They certainly did shoot down enemy planes but that was not their primary roles. Yes, I do believe the RAF had developed better night fighting techniques as I would have expected the US to have developed better night intradiction fighters. The position of the US forces gave them a better shot at the Germany lines of communications, just as the British had the incentive to go after German night fighters. It's only logical.

Once you get those Mods tapes on your arms, then you talk like that!
Mods tapes? I am going to look at the local university and see if they have British classes to take at night.

Well I thought that as well, but you would have thought that our 'Expert' would, being an 'expert', would be using the correct terminology. I mean if you can't even get the name of the role of the aircraft right, who's going to beleive another word you say when you insist on saying everyone else is wrong and you are right?

Plant-pilot, are you talking to me?

Ah, explosives..... one of my specialities :)

In that case then i shall abide by the How To Be An Evil Overlord Rules:

If I build a bomb, I will simply remember which wire to cut if it has to be deactivated and make every wire red.

    That'll confuse you.

So can we just clarify if we're talking night fighters or night intruders here?

You poor deluded soul. Your idea of confusing me as to which wire to cut shows that your idea of IED disruption is only 30 years out of date. Deal with a device with a pair of snips? How very 1960s.

It would seem that if that's the best you can do, you might as well save yourself the emarrasment and not bother.

Sorry Plant Pot, but there will of course be a failsafe devise hidden in the bomb. It will comprise of a decent watch that is not affected by random fluctuations in the quantum universe, and it will not be set to go off at 0. That is for rank amateurs. Mine will go off at a different number. Are you lucky at Lotto?;)

So is it intruders or fighters we're talking here?

While you have the prancing horces or tate and lyles on your arm!

In 1977, I follishly bought a tea mug with the Royal coat of Arms, which I took to Matleo for the coffe swindle. it disappeared and turned up on the WO Adjs desk!! It might still be down there, sealed in a cupboard, waiting for the return of the RAF to the Pit!

Well Jimbo started the thread and said 'Nightfighters', but what he was on about was anything but. So you'll have to ask him what 'he' meant.

    you a WO? I'd PVR!!

PVR = Premature Voluntary Release = Buying yourself out of the forces rather than doing your time. As in the old ditty:-

    "Don't buy a TV,
    don't buy a car.
    Save all your money,
    and PVR!"

I haven't got any photos of me in 'full Dress Uniform' sorry. So I'm affraid I will be unable to fulfill your birthday dream.

Besides, I wouldn't want people thinking I have time for drill and parades and things when there are far more important things to be done. I'm sure someone from a Gurads Battalion will be more than happy to show off their Cerimonial Parade dress.

Nightfighters. That's what the were called. The did multiple roles but they were still called nightfighters. Never have heard them call anything different. Might be different in a British lingo because they were more multi-role and certain performed more counter air missions. Weyland called them nightfighters and if you look them up on the web, that's what you will see then called.
