    Hello all.

I've just been given a collection of items belonging to a David William Denny AC1. 1879431. Within this paperwork, among others, is a letter addressed to him at 137 MU. There also references to 25 squadron and possibly 255 squadron.
I have a couple of queries please, firstly would he have been a part of 137 maintenance unit and then attached to various squadrons or direct part of the squadron.
Also is it possible if anyone has more details of 137 MU movements if he was permanently with them so I can see exactly where he was and with. There are indications he served in Italy, Egypt and Malta. He joined on 12 Nov 1943 and left on 29 Jun 1946.

    Thanks

    Dan.

Cheers for that TD. Some good info there. I'm still unsure though how the units would be set up or attached to squadrons. The chap in the post you linked to would most probably have served my chap which is a nice little touch to see the photos.

Different formations with different purposes. Overseas they would be controlled by a higher formation such as Command to co-ordinate purpose without waste/duplication of resource.

The MU could provide the function of barrack equipment storage/issue, aircraft storage, aircraft repair, equipment/engines storage/repair depending on it's establlshment. If designated as aircraft repair then it could carry out third and forth line servicing eg major repair, annual and 500 hrs inspection and reduction to produce.

A Squadron provided stores functions as above but on the scale of a unit needs rather than Command. The squadron also carried out first line and second line maintenance functions for own equipment on charge eg turnround, regular inspection tasks and some more complex repairs such as engine change.

No.255 Squadron is more likely than No.25 given the locations and timespan you mention.

A Fitter could be gainfully employed at either MU or squadron and could be posted between each without re-mustering.

Thanks for that Ross, clears up my understanding a little. Looks like I still have some work to do on where my chap was.
    Thanks
