Among the pilots to die was Georges Doutrepont, the Belgian whose plane crashed onto Staplehurst station.
Georges Doutrepont was one of several Belgian Air Force pilots who escaped to Great Britain in the summer of 1940 to join the RAF. After a short refresher course, he was assigned to No. 229 Squadron in early August.

Doutrepont was killed during the Battle of Britain when his Hawker Hurricane collided with an enemy aircraft. His aircraft eventually crashed into the Staplehurst railway station, sadly also killing a ticket clerk.
