    Hi All I wonder if someone can help with an abbreviation on a RASC service record please. I am looking at the service record for Pte G W McClary who served with the RASC during the war. It would appear that on the 18th September 1940 he was posted for duty with HQ SWA Devonport from 7 Coy at Bulford. I cannot find any reference to this abbreviation in relation to the RASC. I attach the relevant section from his service record and would also appreciate any comments on the remaining entries from SWA onwards please. Am Ok for his later career in WW2- Wilfrid McClary went on to get a commission and sadly died in Germany in a traffic accident in 1945 but this section of it is a bit confusing to me. Any help gratefully received. Thank you. Trevor

    Hello Trevor

    SWA = South Western Area.

    South Western Area covered Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. On 28th February 1941 the South Western Area was designated as the Devon and Cornwall County Division. This in turn was redesignated 77th Infantry Division on 1st December 1941.

    These changes are reflected in the postings shown on the record.

    Many thanks for your helpful reply. That makes more sense to me now as I was able to read 77th Infantry Division.
